Asbestos victims and their families urged to claim compensation as government sets up fund
- Symptoms often only appear up to 50 years after exposure
- Around 300 people struggle to find a party to sue for damages every year
People who have contracted a form of cancer after working with asbestos are being urged to claim their share of a compensation pot.
The Mesothelioma Fund was set up by the Department for Work and Pensions in April and is funded with insurer’s cash.
It offers payouts to people who suffer from the illness as well as the families of those who have died of the disease.
Asbestos: It is estimated that every year 300 people struggle to find a party to sue for damages
Recipients of the money must have contracted the illness as a result of being exposed to asbestos at work through their employer’s negligence.
To benefit, people must have been unable to receive compensation either because they cannot trace their employer of that time or their insurer.
The symptoms of mesothelioma often only appear up to 50 years after the person was first exposed to asbestos.
It is estimated that every year 300 people struggle to find a party to sue for damages, because companies become insolvent or insurance records go missing.
People must have been diagnosed with mesothelioma after July 25, 2012, to qualify for the payouts under the scheme. To apply you should, visit mesoscheme.org.uk. Alternatively, call 0131 331 9090.
