School staff inadvertently record foul-mouthed chat about autistic pupil on his mother's VOICEMAIL... after believing they had hung up

|

A horrified mother heard foul-mouthed school staff insult her autistic son in a voicemail message after they thought they had hung up.

Leighanne Bromley, 29, from Coventry, said her jaw hit the ground when she first heard the message last week.

Now the disgusted mother has called for the staff heard abusing her son to be suspended from RNIB Three Spires Academy in Coventry.

The special school, which has more than 50 per cent autistic pupils, posted an apology to Leighanne on its website on Friday.

Leighanne Bromley, 29, heard foul-mouthed school staff insult her autistic son in a voicemail message after they thought they had hung up

Her son, Harley, 10, had been off school sick with a cold when a staff member left a friendly voicemail. The staff member then inadvertently recorded a foul-mouthed rant about her son after falsely believing they had hung up

The voicemail left to Leighanne Bromley by RNIB Three Spires Academy staff

Woman: Hi Leighanne. I was just ringing to see how Harley is. Alright, well I'll speak to you later, bye.

(Puts down phone, believing she had hung up)

Woman: And make sure he's off all f***king week.

Man: What about two weeks?

Woman: Well don't tell her that.

(Inaudible)

Man: Oh yeah, (woman) just wanted to make sure that Harley is off all week, and the second question is could you keep him off next week as well.

Woman: Yes please, till the end of the year.

(Inaudible)

Man: Don't bring him back until the 27th of July when (inaudible) we are closed.

(Loud laughter)

A spokesman for the school said headteacher Rob Jones had been in direct contact with the mother since last week over the accident.

Ms Bromley said her son Harley, 10, was off school with a cold.

A member of staff left a friendly voicemail last Tuesday enquiring after Harley's health and when he would be returning to school.

What follows was an exchange between the woman and male member of staff joking about Harley being kept out of school until the end of term.

Ms Bromley said she couldn't believe the contents of the message and had to hang up and listen to the message several times before reaching the end.

She said: 'My jaw just hit the floor.

'I was gobsmacked and horrified someone who is entrusted with my son's care had that attitude towards him.'

The message came on the back of a difficult year for her son who had developed behavioural problems.

But the issues were minor and Ms Bromley had attempted to liaise with the school on how best to deal with Harley, who had previously had no problems over his three-and-a-half years at Three Spires.

The frustrated mother quickly took the matter to the school's headteacher Rob Jones and demanded the staff involved face suspension during a meeting.

Ms Bromley said: 'I was gobsmacked and horrified someone who is entrusted with my son's care had that attitude towards him'

Three Spires Academy headteacher Robert Jones has issued an apology to Ms Bromley

She said instead the school proposed a verbal warning for the man and a written warning for the woman.

Ms Bromley added: 'I asked if they could move him temporarily into another class so he is away from the people involved but they poo pooed the idea.

'I'm left in an impossible situation where I don't want to send him in but I could get in trouble if I don't.

'I'm still sending him but I'm not happy and nervous about how he's being treated but I feel I don't have a choice.'

Ms Bromley said she felt compelled to make the recording public after the school sent a text to parents warning of a possible negative news story being reported.

The text went on to say the matter was under investigation and was not a safeguarding concern.

Ms Bromley added: 'I'm left in an impossible situation where I don't want to send him in but I could get in trouble if I don't'

'I didn't think that was right. This gives parents the opportunity to make their minds up,' she added.

She now plans to lodge a complaint with the school's governors, however a meeting date has not yet been set.

In a statement on the school's website, Rob Jones, headteacher at RNIB Three Spires Academy, said: 'We offer a full and sincere apology to Leighanne Bromley.

'This type of behaviour is not acceptable and goes against the values of our school.

'We are taking this matter seriously and a full internal investigation is taking place.'

The RNIB, which sponsors Three Spires Academy, said the school had been in contact with Leighanne since last Friday.

In a statement released this morning, the charity said: 'We have made a full and sincere apology to Leighanne Bromley.

'This type of behaviour is not acceptable and goes against the values of our school and has no place in RNIB.

'We are taking this matter extremely seriously and a full internal investigation is taking place and robust action will be taken where appropriate.'
