A 71-year-old wheelchair-bound woman has been left with serious head injuries after a bear walked into her home and attacked her. 

New Hampshire's Fish and Game Department says the beast somehow got inside Apryl Rogers' house at around 1.15am on Tuesday in Groton, a rural community in the central part of the state.

The woman was hospitalized with serious injuries and was taken into surgery, according to WBZ-TV.

Rogers is known in the community for leaving her door open.

It is not known if she left the door open before the attack on Tuesday night.

'The home owner unknowingly walked in on the animal, and that bear did what any animal is going to do when it feels cornered. It is going to act defensively. It's going to panic in an effort to get out,' Fish and Game Major Jim Juneau said. 

'And I suspect in this case, the woman was in the wrong place at the wrong time.' 

Fish and Game officers said they are searching for the bear. They are concerned the bear may have rabies.

They used dogs to try to track down the bear but rain got rid of the scent.
