The fire department was also summoned to the address after it became apparent that someone had left the gas on inside the house.

Once the gas was shut off and the residence was deemed safe enough to enter, police found the female victim's husband dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a closet in the master bedroom.

Sgt Ben Beall, with the Precinct 4 Constable's Office, told Click 2 Houston he believes the man ambushed his wife when she returned home from work and shot her.

He also revealed the couple were in the middle of a divorce at the time of their deaths.

Law enforcement officials have not identified the couple as of Tuesday afternoon.
