Ayda Field defends her lack of musical experience whilst Robbie Williams champions 'underdog' wife as the pair make history as first married X Factor judges

Robbie Williams' wife Ayda Field has defended her lack of musical experience, after the pair made history as the first married couple to appear on The X Factor UK's judging panel.

Despite Robbie being the better known of the pair, the 44-year-old singer revealed that his success is all down to wife, Ayda, 39, and called her the 'underdog' of the judging panel.

Speaking after it was confirmed the duo will join Simon Cowell and Louis Tomlinson  on the judging panel this season, Ayda also defended herself, reasoning: 'It makes it's a little more exciting. I'm excited to be the underdog and show the boys how it's done!'

Meanwhile, Robbie told MailOnline: 'Ayda is a member of the public too and they never get it wrong.

'It is fallacy that there's a magic formula to what makes a pop star. If a member of the public was up here now their opinion would be as valid as hers.'

The star added that she is the key to his own musical success, with the best-selling solo artist in Britian revealing that she is behind all of his business decisions.

Robbie reasoned: 'Ayda is my rock and she’s looked after me though thick and thin. I would say every move I’ve made professionally has been made by my wife. I agree with her 95 percent of the time.'

Ayda - who has enjoyed a new lease of fame recently as a panellist on Loose Women - added: 'I’ve been here every step of the way with Robbie. It’s a very emotional process and I’m really excited about helping people achieve their dreams.

'Just like Simon said [agreeing to do the show] was a very organic process.'

The pair have certainly gotten the seal of approval from head honcho Simon, who said of the panel: 'The three of them are going to bring a whole new energy. I think we’ve got a good chance.'

The media mogul added: 'We’ve tried to get Robbie on every show we’ve had for 15 years then it happened by accident. We went to my house and chatted on the balcony and did a deal.'

He added that he hadn't considered Ayda for the position until she was drafted him to interview him for Loose Women, in an encounter that left him in stitches.

'With Ayda, we did an interview in Los Angeles and it’s one of the funniest interviews I’ve ever had. But these two together... Ayda has a passion for people, an optimism. I’ve never felt so excited.'

Simon wasn't the only star excited by Ayda's presence, with Stacey Solomon turning out to heap praise on her co-panellist.

Stacey - who reached the X Factor final in 2006 as a former contestant - gushed: 'We are so excited at Loose Women because we’ve been able too see how feisty, hilarious and brilliant you are.'

Touching on Ayda's first meeting with Simon - which he said first convinced him to sign her up as a judge - Stacey asked: 'When you went over to interview Simon at his house was that when the deal was settled?'

Simon then reasoned: 'I wouldn’t say settled but I didn’t know that Robbie was going to turn up as well, which was great.

'And actually I would say Robbie and [Simon's son] Eric stole the entire evening. Our kids hang out together and there was that one night when we did Britain’s Got Talent and they came down and we chatted.'
