President Trump has called his Helsinki summit with Vladimir Putin a 'huge success' just hours after saying that he misspoke when he said he saw no reason to believe Russia had interfered in the 2016 US election. A defiant Trump tweeted Tuesday night that the 'meeting between President Putin and myself was a great success, except in the Fake News Media!' It came just hours after he spoke directly to cameras on Tuesday afternoon in an effort to blunt criticism of a press conference with Putin at which he let the Russian president off the hook for election interference. Glancing at a printed statement that he had marked up with hand-written edits throughout his remarks, Trump said he accepts his intelligence community's assessment that Russia meddled in the election - although it could be other people also - and said he meant to say yesterday that he had no reason to doubt the professionals within his administration. And there was a second dig at his own most senior spies as Trump's chief of staff John Kelly accidentally switched off the lights, plunging the White House cabinet room into temporary darkness and prompting Trump to quip: 'That must be the intelligence agencies.' Trump said he was surprised by the firestorm that awaited him when he arrived on Monday in Washington and realized he needed to 'clear up' his comments after reviewing the transcript of his presser with Putin. The president said that he has the 'greatest respect' for his intelligence chiefs.

President Trump turned on the ex-CIA director who accused of treason after his meeting with Vladimir Putin, telling Fox News in an interview airing Tuesday: 'I think he's a very bad person.' He slammed John Brennan repeatedly in comments released from his interview with Tucker Carlson, which he recorded immediately after one with the network's Sean Hannity. 'I think Brennan is a very bad guy, and if you look at it, a lot of things happened under his watch,' Trump told Carlson. The president equated Brennan to FBI lovers Lisa Page (top) and Peter Strozk (bottom).

Reexamined Dare Stone could solve mystery of Lost Colony of Roanoke

After 428 years, the mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke remains unsolved. A reexamination of the Dare Stone (right), supposedly written by colonist Eleanor White Dare, could bring answers. The original Dare Stone was found in 1937 and taken to Emory University, before it was bought by Brenau University. Though it was difficult to read, scholars at Emory were able to decipher the message, which, if authentic, tells the gruesome story of what happened to the Roanoke colonists. Though there have been doubts of the stone's veracity, Brenau took a sample from it in 2016 with the help of geologists at the University of North Carolina in Asheville. They were able to determine approximately where in Virginia the stone is from based on the minerals present in it. Though Brenau wants to do more studies, it is a small university and bringing together the funding to do comprehensive research is difficult. Brenau President Ed Schrader is pictured with the Dare Stone (left) and the place where the sample of the stone was removed is pictured inset.
