The One Direction star, 24, cut an incredibly glum figure as he met up with two pals at the Bluebird Cafe in Chelsea.
Sources claim he barely spoke, and 'just sat there smoking' while occupying an outdoor seating area - a total contrast to Cheryl's high spirits as she celebrated her birthday with her former Girls Aloud bandmates the previous evening.

Clad in a casual white polo shirt and chinos, Liam is seen puffing on a cigarette at their outdoor table, and pensively looking into the distance as his company talk between them.
A source claimed the singer was clearly unhappy during the outing, and even cut the meeting short - perhaps in anticipation of his breakup announcement with Cheryl.

She wrote: 'We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It's been a tough decision for us to make.

According to The Sun, the couple mutually agreed to separate a fortnight ago following months of speculation regarding the state of their relationship.
A source told the publication: 'Cheryl and Liam worked really hard on their relationship – they had troubles earlier this year and were able to get through them.
'But they’re in different stages of their lives and, after a lot of careful thought, came to a decision that it’s best for everyone if they do go their separate ways.
Happier times: The pair were last seen at the BRIT Awards in February (above), but were later accused by fans of faking their display of unity
It has since been claimed that the singer considered moving out of Liam's house in February, as their romance began to falter.
That same month, the pair put on a show of unity at the BRITs, although they were subsequently accused by fans of faking it for publicity.
In April, the pair then enjoyed a make or break trip to the Maldives, but it appears the holiday was to no avail.
It has since been claimed that Cheryl's mother Joan Callaghan, 'got in the way' of the pair's relationship, leading to their split.
A source told MailOnline that while Liam and the Newcastle native initially got on well, it soon became a case of 'two against one' with both mother and daughter fighting against him.

It was previously reported that Joan had moved into Liam's £5 million Surrey mansion - where Cheryl is living with their son Bear, 15 months - but this is not the case.
