A 13-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl were both bitten in two apparent shark attacks at separate beaches off of Fire Island in New York on Wednesday.
The two children were bit at Atlantique Beach and Sailors Haven, which are about 4.5 miles apart, around noon.
Lola Polina was swimming in waist-deep water at Sailors Haven when her father saw her suddenly start to panic.

'It was like bedlam,' Philip Polina told Fox5NY. 'I see her going into shock, I saw the thrashing about.'

Lola told her father that she had seen a fin in the water. It is believed that a shark no larger than two-feet tall bit her.
'The way the cuts were - they were long and deep, puncture wounds,' Polina said.
'They were too big to be something like a sand shark because they have tiny teeth. These were fairly large teeth.'
'Once we figured it out, it was pretty surreal,' he added.
Lola was able to walk after the attack but was taken to a local hospital for further treatment and examination.

A lifeguard spotted the wound as the boy came stumbling out of the ocean and first responders dressed and cleaned it, according to NBC New York.

The tooth has been removed from the boy's leg and is being analyzed to discover what kind of shark bit him.
Islip beaches were closed for the day following the attack.
Only 13 shark attacks have been reported in New York since 1900.
