Date night: Caitlyn Jenner, 68, heads to the ESPYs with new 21-year-old 'girlfriend'… and reminisces about her first public outing as transgender, before feud tore her family apart

The 68-year-old former Olympian sported a black velour knee-length dress with black pumps as she hit the red carpet at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Caitlyn's glamorous date wore a midnight blue silk dress and matched the reality star with cascading blonde tresses styled in gentle curls.

It comes three years after the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star made her first public outing at the ceremony after coming out as transgender.

In an Instagram shared on Wednesday Caitlyn reminisced about her first time at the event as Caitlyn, writing: 'Sophia and I off to the ESPY's. Bringing back old memories of my first public outing. Life is good!'

It's in stark contrast to 2015 when Caitlyn attended the ESPY Awards and was surrounded by her loved ones who posed for pictures with her backstage.

That year the reality star, formerly known as Bruce, was honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage for her athletic achievements and her public struggle to come out as transgender.

Caitlyn is now joined by gal pal Sophia, 21, for the glitzy event, her constant companion in recent months.

The duo are said to live together at Caitlyn's Malibu home and are regularly spotted on the coffee run together in their local neighborhood.

Three years ago the Kardashians rallied round to support the star with Kim, Khloe and Kourtney glammed up and clad in black evening outfits for the event.

But in the years since a lot has changed as the E! stars relationships have been tested to the limit.

When Caitlyn unveiled her new identity in a Vanity Fair interview in June 2015 she took aim at ex-wife Kris claiming she was mistreated during the 23-year marriage.

Kris' daughter Khloe, who Caitlyn helped raise, took issue with some of the comments in the interview - and in an episode of Caitlyn's new E! show, I Am Cait she told Caitlyn: 'We want to be there and support you but we don't think that entails you speaking negatively about my mom. In our opinion you don't even need to mention my mom. Let's focus on the actual cause here and not drag my mom through the mud.'

Kim concurred in an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, saying 'All Caitlyn can talk about is that my mom mistreated her and was awful and all these really rude things, when there's no reason to bash my mom.'

The Kardashians were also open about the fact they felt like they were the last to know about Caitlyn's decision to transition.

The following year Khloe said she received angry messages from Caitlyn after her very candid interview with Howard Stern about how she felt Caitlyn wasn't honest.

'She can tell me to f*** off all she wants. I don't have a relationship with her. I'm done.' Khloe said in an episode of season 12 of KUWTK.

In 2017 Caitlyn's tell-all book was released which the Kardashians claimed included a lot of made-up stories.

'I've never been so angry and disappointed in somebody in my whole life,' Kris vented at the time.

At an event in November 2017 Caitlyn claimed she hadn't spoken to Kim in over a year and hadn't spoken to Khloe in two years.

'They don't want me in their lives, they bashed me pretty badly. It's devastating when your kids do that. It really hurt... In the book I express some opinions and got shot down. It was not about the Kardashians. They were only mentioned on 20 pages. They made it more about them on television. The book was about my life. That's caused a lot of the separation between us.' she said at Cambridge University's union.

The father-of-six appears to be spending less and less time with biological children Kendall, 22, Kylie, 20, Brody, 34, Brandon, 37, Burt, 39 and Casey, 38 in recent months amid ongoing tension.

Most recently, Caitlyn chose not to attend Brody's wedding last month and instead opted to attend charity bash Life Ball at City Hall in Vienna, Austria.

People previously reported that Caitlyn would not be at the nuptials because of 'work commitments that have been set up for months and couldn’t be changed in the end.'
