Liverpool confirm record £65m arrival of goalkeeper Alisson

Alisson has become the most expensive goalkeeper in history after Liverpool paid Roma £65million to land Brazil's No 1. This is a huge statement of intent from Liverpool and takes their spending for this window to £174.45million on the back of deals for Guinea midfielder Naby Keita, Brazil international Fabinho and Switzerland forward Xherdan Shaqiri. Alisson arrived on Merseyside on Wednesday and underwent a medical at Liverpool's Melwood training base.

Blackburn 0-2 Liverpool: Lazar Markovic and Daniel Sturridge on target

BLACKBURN 0-2 LIVERPOOL - DOMINIC KING AT EWOOD PARK: Pre-season, in Jurgen Klopp’s world, is all about players taking chance and giving him decisions to make. This, Liverpool’s manager believes, is the point for his squad to make their point. With that in mind, Liverpool’s manager will have left Ewood Park digesting a positive problem. Daniel Sturridge’s future, as always, is the subject of great scrutiny, but he showed, perhaps, that he might yet have another 12 months left at Anfield.

DEREK LAWRENSON AT CARNOUSTIE: McIlroy took the high road with his driver and earned the good fortune his gutsy strategy deserved. Woods took the low with his ‘stinger’ iron shots.

McIlroy's top bombing! Rory to keep unleashing driver at Carnoustie

RIATH AL-SAMARRAI AT CARNOUSTIE: He said he will take his driver on another bomb run on Friday but maybe it would be a sensible idea if Rory McIlroy took it to a cobwebbed corner of the garage instead. He won’t, of course. He’s not that sort — too adventurous, too thrillingly bold, too committed to his plan. And which golf fan doesn’t love him for it? But after the challenges he made for himself on Thursday, you would understand if there was at least some temptation for an easier life. Pulls, hooks — call them what you want, the Northern Irishman went through the whole repertoire of misplaced tee shots in his first round. Repeatedly he found himself wading through the rough stuff down the left of the fairways, waist deep at times, far beyond the ropes at others.

Southgate does England proud as Matthew shines at the Open

LAURIE WHITWELL AT CARNOUSTIE: The World Cup is done, but one Southgate is still in contention for a trophy this summer. It is Matthew rather than Gareth eyeing the prize, and while the England manager's bid for glory foundered in the uncharted territory of a World Cup semi-final, the golfer of the same name is on more familiar ground as he seeks to win the Open.

JONATHAN MCEVOY AT CARNOUSTIE: What was that on Woods’s neck and what did it mean to the Open chances of the icon who spent Thursday as the most followed figure at Carnoustie?

DEREK LAWRENSON AT CARNOUSTIE: McIlroy countered: ‘I like Butch a lot but I would definitely say I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum to someone who’s mechanical.'

MIKE DICKSON AT CARNOUSTIE: We might tend to think of Justin Rose as the anti-Colin Montgomerie, all English calm and reserve. Yet he showed that he is also in touch with his inner Monty.

Rain is forecast throughout Friday morning, with McIlroy due to begin his second round at 7:52am alongside Marc Leishman and Thorbjorn Olesen. Woods is due out at 10:20am, meanwhile.

DEREK LAWRENSON AT CARNOUSTIE: It is a heck of a thing to be accused of cheating by a fellow pro — and to be playing in the Open on the strength of being given the benefit of the doubt by an official.

Jordan Pickford challenged to show off his golf skills live on TV

After an emotionally draining World Cup, most England players are out for a bit of relaxation ahead of the new Premier League season. That wasn't quite the case for Jordan Pickford on Thursday however as he took on the stress of showing off his golfing technique live to the entire nation. Taking in the first day of The Open at Carnoustie, the Everton goalkeeper was enjoying the action in the Scottish sun before he was accosted by Sky Sports producers.

Daly was not able to compete this week due to a knee injury — but when this pair of patriotic trousers were spotted in the crowd we thought Long John had come to watch.

The Open returns to Carnoustie for the first time since 2007 and while the likes of Padraig Harrington and Paul Lawrie have happy memories of the Angus track, it has given more than a few players nightmares over the years.

Rather than take a penalty drop, Vegas got into the stream to hit his ball, which was resting on silt. He left his trousers rolled down and got the ball out first time but was unlucky to find a bunker.

The Englishman again showed his troubles may be a thing of the past when he reeled off five birdies in an opening two-under 69 in the first round of the British Open on Thursday.

Liverpool finally set to solve goalkeeper issue: Can Klopp now finally win the Premier

Bright things could be on the horizon for Liverpool, who finally appear to have solved their goalkeeping dilemma with a world record £67million bid for Roma's Brazilian stopper Alisson. The Merseysiders have wasted no time in addressing their major issue within the squad, having been left reeling since Loris Karius' double blunder costed them Champions League glory in Kiev.
