Melissa Benoist talks early career struggles as she rocks floral off-the-shoulder top at NYC event

She is known as a star of such TV shows as Glee and Supergirl.

But Melissa Beloist, who started in the theater, shared on the BUILD Series this week that had some trouble transitioning into screen work early in her career.

'In my experience, it was harder for me to get roles earlier on when I was so thick in theater at first, you know, because a lot of people were like: "You gotta tone it down." Like it was too big,' shared the 29-year-old, who is making her Broadway debut with a limited engagement in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

Of Glee, she said that 'in essence, I was so lucky that that was my first foray into television, because I was able to hone skills that I needed for television, or - it was kinda like going back to school for acting for the camera.'

She pointed out of the smash hit musical series: 'But I still got to indulge in the things that I loved about singing and dancing and being onstage.'

Beautiful, a jukebox musical that first opened on Broadway in 2014, is playing at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, which until 2010 was Henry Miller's Theatre.

Jessie Mueller was the original Broadway cast's leading lady, and has had replacements since leaving the show, but Melissa never felt 'pressure' to copy them.

She explained that this was 'because luckily, I'm playing a real person, and there's plenty of video of her. There are plenty of interviews I could watch, her music obviously, so kind of was doing my own research outside of the rehearsal process, where, you know, I could come in and feel like I had my own interpretation.'

Melissa cut a chic figure in a frilly white, navy and pale blue floral top that went tantalizingly off the shoulder at the left side.

She slid into a skintight pair of jeans that emphasized her enviably svelte legs, and she folded up the hems to flash just a trace of leg.

Tucking her blonde hair behind her hears, she wore a gleaming pair of hoop earrings and accentuated her screen siren features with makeup.

The Colorado-born bombshell crossed her legs as she settled down for her interview conversation, seeming in excellent spirits throughout.

Melissa also got in a bit of posing in front of the BUILD Series backdrop - both by herself and with a group of her Beautiful cast-mates.
