'I'll start bawling': David Spade pays tribute to his 'lovely, beautiful' sister-in-law Kate Spade and recalls how his girlfriends would buy new wardrobes before meeting the late designer

  • 'As good as we can. It's been very tough, obviously, and just - it is very sweet that everyone came out of the woodwork,' said David of Kate Spade's death
  • He told a story about how his girlfriends over the years would always buy a new wardrobe if they knew that they would be meeting or seeing the designer
  • He had to cut the story short, however, as he became increasingly emotional, saying that it he kept going he would 'start bawling'
  • 'Katie was very sweet, she knew that they were doing that so she would mention something or say some compliment,' said Spade
  • Spade had previously paid tribute to Kate by posting an old photo of the two dancing on Instagram in the days after her death

David Spade spoke about the loss of his sister-in-law Kate Spade during an appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday.

The actor, who is currently on his first press tour since Kate's death to support his new Netflix movie Father of the Year and his book  A Polaroid Guy in a Snapchat World, was asked at the end of his interview with host Robin Roberts how the family was coping with the tragedy.

'As good as we can. It's been very tough, obviously, and just - it is very sweet that everyone came out of the woodwork, that she really made an impact,' said Spade.

He then launched into a story about how much the women he dated over the years loved and admired the late designer, so much so that they would always buy a new wardrobe before meeting with Kate.

It was a brief story however, and ended with an emotional Spade saying: 'She was such a beautiful, lovely, great spirit that will be missed. I'll start bawling.'

'I remember when we used to hang out, it's funny because every girl I was with or anyone I knew would dress differently when they were going to see Katie,' said Spade.

'They would bring their A-game, it was very sweet. They were like, "Is Katie coming, is Andy coming?", and if they were it was a whole new wardrobe.'

The best part of it all he said was how his sister-in-law was always quick to point out how nice his friends looked when they would meet.

'Katie was very sweet, she knew that they were doing that so she would mention something or say some compliment,' said Spade.

'And when i said, "you don't dress up for me," they said, "yeah, that's her and you're you."'

In the wake of Kate's death, Spade posted a photo of the two taken some years prior.

'Fuzzy picture but i love it. Kate and I during Christmas family photos. We had so much fun that day,' wrote David.

'She was so sharp and quick on her feet. She could make me laugh so hard. I still cant believe it. Its a rough world out there people, try to hang on.'

He also made a $100,000 donation to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

His brother, Kate's husband Andy, spokes of his wife's struggles in a statement after her death.

'Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives,' read the statement.

'We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling.'

Kate shot to fame in the mid-90s thanks to her eponymous line of handbags and was also the aunt of Rachel Brosnahan, the star of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.

Andy and Kate Spade bought the nine-room apartment in which she died in 1999 for $2.675 million, and also owned a vineyard in Napa Valley.

The couple launched their design line back in 1993, starting at first with just handbags before expanding to clothes and other accessories.

Three years in the couple was able to open their first store, and for the next decade continue to grow the company.

She had launched international and home lines by 2004, having by that point sold off most of her company.

Andy also launched a men's line of bags, Jack Spade, in 1996, which is still sold at stores such as Barneys.

Neiman Marcus purchased 56 per cent of the company in 1999 and the remaining 44 per cent by 2006, at which time Kate left the business to raise her daughter.
