Danica Patrick SLIMED as she accepts Legend honors at Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Awards in LA

Things got messy as Danica Patrick was honored with the Legend Award at the 2018 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California on Thursday.

The race car driver, 36, was hit with gold slime dropping from the ceiling after she accepted the honors, drenching her from head to toe as she stood on the stage at the midsummer ceremony.

The slime obscured a fashionable summer ensemble the 5ft2in beauty wore to the event, as she was clad in a long-sleeved blush red floral skirt with cutout areas near her abs.

Patrick was fresh off her hosting stint at the ESPYs on Wednesday, where some of her jokes received tepid feedback via social media.

One of her punchlines referenced LeBron's recent defection from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

'No matter what else is going on in the world, sports have always had the power to inspire and give hope… unless those people are from Cleveland,' she said.

The slime tradition is derived from one of the network's earliest hits, You Can't Do That on Television, a 1980s comedy show, as cast members who uttered the phrase 'I don't know' were drenched in green slime cascading from the ceiling.

The gooey feature has evolved into a staple for the children's-oriented network's award shows.

Past stars who have been hit with the slime include actress Liza Koshy, wrestler John Cena and model Heidi Klum.
