Manchester students paint over classic Kipling poem 'If'

Students at the University of Manchester have painted over the famous Rudyard Kipling (inset) poem 'If' because he stands for the 'opposite of liberation, empowerment and human rights'. The famous poem can be clearly seen on the wall (pictured far left), before a student (pictured centre) begins to paint over it and add a new poem called 'Still I Rise' by Maya Angelou. The student (pictured far right) can be seen proudly displaying the new poem covering up 'If' by Rudyard Kipling. 'If' was originally painted on the wall of the students union by a resident artist, but removed by the students because it was 'deeply inappropriate' to promote the work of Kipling. Fatima Abid, the general secretary of Manchester's SU (inset) tweeted: 'Today, as a team we removed an imperialist's work from the walls of our union and replaced them with the words of Maya Angelou- God knows black and brown voices have been written out of history enough, and it's time we try to reverse that, at the very least in our union.'

Astonishing footage reveals moment French President Emmanuel Macron's deputy chief of staff 'donned a riot helmet and police uniform so he could attack anti-Government protesters during street demonstrations'

Astonishing video footage (left) captured at a street demonstration in Paris shows French President Emmanuel Macron's deputy chief of staff Alexandre Benalla (pictured on duty right), who is in his mid-30s, attacking two young protesters, one female, one male. The senior Elysee Palace official had put on a police helmet (pictured inset), despite not being authorised to do so. He can clearly be seen first of all grabbing a young woman by the neck at the demonstration on May 1 - a traditional day of street action that this year saw hundreds of thousands campaigning across France against Mr Macron's employment reforms. Benalla then turns his attention to a bearded Left-wing activist who has been apprehended by gendarmes. 'I won't go near children anymore': Tearful Sir Cliff Richard reveals painful impact BBC's 'nonsense' decision to report police raid on his home still has on his life as judge awards him £210,000 damages - with Beeb facing £5m in costs

Sir Cliff Richard has revealed the devastating impact of his four-year legal battle with the BBC after it finally came to an end today, confessing he 'won't go anywhere near children' again. The popstar said the harrowing toll of the case on his day-to-day life means he will 'never completely recover' from the ordeal and he no longer comes into contact with other people's children for fear of the repercussions. His words came after a High Court judge ruled the BBC had invaded his privacy by broadcasting a police raid of his house live on TV after he was linked to a child sex abuse claim. No charges were ever brought against the 77-year-old and he was today awarded £210,000 in damages. The corporation could be left with a bill of up to £5million after the case dragged on for four years. Mr Justice Mann said the BBC had infringed the star's privacy rights in a 'serious and sensationalist way' and increased the damages because the corporation boasted about its 'scoop of the year' at an awards event. Speaking to ITV News straight after the decision, he said: 'I used to use it [a tunnel linking Centre Court and Court One at the Wimbledon tennis tournament] regularly to go and see the matches I was interested in on Court One and it went right past the ball boys dressing room. I won't go there now. I won't go anywhere near children. Why? I've spent my whole life hugging people's grandchildren.'

There are no winners in the epic court room battle between Sir Cliff Richard (pictured) and the BBC, which came to an end at London's High Court today, WRITES JANET STREET-PORTER.

The Cliff Richard case could have profound implications for the way the media reports on police investigations, legal experts warned last night. Sir Cliff (pictured) outside of court.

Trump claims he confronted Putin on meddling in the 2016 election

President Donald Trump is taking a much tougher line on Russian President Vladimir Putin in a new CBS  interview than he did just days ago in Helsinki at Putin's side. He says he warned Putin in private on election meddling: 'We're not going to have it, and that's the way it's going to be.'

Video of Melania looking horrified after shaking hands with Putin emerges as social media speculates that she is 'the only one in the room who understands how dangerous this man actually is'

Putin can be seen smiling and nodding in the clip as he is introduced to Melania by President Trump in Helsinki, Finland on Monday. Melania, who is a few inches taller than the ex-spy strongman, also smiles during the handshake in an apparently natural way. But as soon as Putin releases her hand and diverts his attention elsewhere, Melania pulls a bizarre face representing what appears to be her shock or horror. She widens her eyes and wobbles her head as the camera looks directly at her. The video has now gone viral, prompting an outpouring of astonishment and confusion on Twitter. It comes after President Trump sought to clarify comments he made during the press conference with Putin. He was widely attacked for appearing to side with Putin rather than his own intelligence agencies over the Russian state's involvement in hacking the Democratic Party during the 2016 election.

QUENTIN LETTS: Boris Johnson's angry Brexit speech at PMQs

Almost 28 years ago, younger and more idealistic, I sat in the Commons press gallery and watched Sir Geoffrey Howe impale Margaret Thatcher with a sour, mocking resignation (pictured top right). Just before 3pm yesterday, former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson (pictured left and bottom right) rose to make his own personal statement. It lacked the theatre of Howe's ambush, for the House was not as full as it was that autumnal afternoon in 1990, but Boris's performance projected a sense of 'can-do' and it was joke-free. He spoke with a piercing seriousness. Was Boris about to skewer Theresa May? No. That was not the intention. He put aside any Prince Hal boisterousness. He forsook cheap shots and played things responsibly, WRITES QUENTIN LETTS.

Theresa May said the notices would tell firms what to do 'in the event of a no-deal scenario'. Meanwhile Liam Fox warned EU leaders of dire consequences of failing to reach an agreement.

Can you trust cosmetics that claim to protect you from the sun?

A new study reveals moisturisers with SPF provide less sun protection than the equivalent-strength sunscreen, because we don't apply them as liberally as sun cream. Claire Coleman compared a selection of products in an experiment at L'Atelier Aesthetics on London's Harley Street and Visia to see the difference in how they respond to UV light. In these pictures, the light blue patches of skin indicate poor levels of protection. The darker the skin in the picture, the better protected it is. Make-up face powder (pictured top centre) with SPF 30 proved to be the worst for protecting skin with a UV score of 9/100. Meanwhile La Roche-Posay suncream (pictured top left) gave almost full protection with a UV score of 97/100.

Court overturns then-11-year-old boy's conviction in slaying

Pennsylvania's highest court on Wednesday overturned the conviction of a man who was 11-years-old at the time he shot dead his father's pregnant fiancée in 2009.  The state Supreme Court's 5-0 ruling clears 20-year-old Jordan Brown of wrongdoing, his lawyers say, in the slaying of 26-year-old Kenzie Houk, who was eight months pregnant when she was found dead in the family's rural western Pennsylvania farmhouse. It reversed a finding by a juvenile court judge in Lawrence County, upheld by a state appellate court, that Brown was guilty of first-degree murder and homicide of an unborn child. The court said prosecutors had not provided enough evidence to support it.

A stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire was reduced to little more than a puddle after the water drained away. Locks along the canal are used to lift or lower boats from one level to another. As only one stretch of canal was affected, the Trust was able to restore water levels.

How Lipizzaners horses were saved from Nazis and Russians

When Hitler annexed Austria in 1938, the Nazis had seized custody of the Spanish Riding School in the capital Vienna and proudly claimed it and its unsurpassed white stallion Lipizzaners (pictured main) as symbols of Teutonic greatness. However, in 1942, while the stallions remained in Vienna, the brood mares were transferred to the ownership of the German Army and shipped hundreds of miles away to a secret 1,500-acre stud at the little town of Hostau in Czechoslovakia (pictured inset). There, one of Hitler's eugenicists, Gustav Rau, was assembling 600 of the best horses from all over Europe to breed what he promised his Fuhrer would be a new super-horse fitting for the so-called Aryan master race. They included championship racehorses from France and thoroughbred Arabs, but the purest of all, the Lipizzaners - small in stature but renowned for their calm temperament - were to be the base of the new bloodline. There were 250 at Hostau. The existence of this vast breeding ranch - along with 150 Allied prisoners-of-war held there to care for the horses - was unknown until the spring of 1945 when a German officer went out of his way to surrender to a U.S. Army unit advancing through southern Germany and nearing the border with Czechoslovakia. He came with a desperate request. 'You must save these horses,' he told his captors. What concerned him was that the Soviet army was just 40 miles east of Hostau and closing fast.
