Tom Brady uses Gisele Bundchen as a human shield to hide his 'dad bod' while wishing his wife a happy 38th birthday

Tom Brady was attacked earlier this week for having a 'dad bod' when images of the NFL star on the beach in Costa Rica surfaced.

Fans thought the 40-year-old New England Patriots player should have had a more chiseled chest with ripped abs as they sent hateful notes on social media.

So it's no wonder then that on Friday, when the athlete was wishing his wife Gisele Bundchen a happy 38th birthday, he used a photo where the supermodel was covering his tummy.

'Happy Birthday! What a great year it has been! We love you so much! Let me count the ways,' he said.

There were three emojis with one being a cake and another a heart.

In his beach shoot, Tom wore patterned red shorts and looked relaxed as he enjoyed some bonding time with his three kids.

Daddy duty: NFL star Tom Brady was back on the beach in Costa Rica this week after being body shamed for not having a six pack

Social media users took to Twitter to complain about the NFL quarterback's beach body and pointing out his lack of a six-pack.

'Wait. This is Brady’s body. That looks like my body. Not expecting my superhero to look like me.' one Twitter user wrote.

'Very pliable' another chimed in.

Another person joked: 'So now Tom Brady has the same body type and same bathing suit as me? Tom and I pride ourselves on durability and gorgeous quads; abs and biceps are for the youngins.'

'I'm 52 and have a better body than Tom Brady,' someone else commented.

On Instagram one user noted the double standards for men and women.

'[Men] can be relaxed with the body [but] nobody says anything. If it were Gisele out of shape they would already be throwing stones at her.' the commented.

'This photo makes me [doubt] the TB12 diet' one person wrote, referring to Tom's holistic vegan meal plan.

Meanwhile TMZ pulled no punches as they published the same snaps while noting Tom 'proves you don’t have to be ripped to shreds to be the G.O.A.T.'

In a recent interview for GQ Tom said he's faced criticism most of his life.

'I was the kid that was the 199th pick that never had the body for it. People didn’t think I’d play one year in the NFL, and now I’m going on my 17th year.'

On Thursday she announced a new project: 'I am excited to share that my book will be released October 2nd! Writing this book was a transformative and intense process for me.

'Uncovering stories deep inside of me made me feel vulnerable and emotional, but through facing my shadows and insecurities I learned how to accept and love myself in a deeper way.

'My intention in writing this book is to share how I overcame certain challenges in my life in hopes that it could help others who may be going thru similar experiences. Proceeds from the book will go to project Água Limpa, to help protect water sources for future generations.'
