Admiring His Majesty’s handiwork! Belgium’s Mathilde and Philippe take in the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Palace in Brussels – including portraits painted by the King himself

On Saturday he will celebrate five years on the Belgian throne.

And King Philippe looked in good spirits as he and Queen Mathilde attended the unveiling of the Summer Exhibitions at the Royal Palace in Brussels on Friday.

The exhibition includes portraits painted by the King himself - including one of his late uncle, King Baudouin. 

The royals were snapped stopping to admire the artistic King's handiwork, with the Queen placing a proud arm around her husband's waist.

Mathilde cut an elegant figure in a chic flower-embellished dress featuring an elegant boatneck neckline and nipped in waist. 

She teamed it with a pair of coral court shoes and matching clutch bag, accessorising with a pair of statement earrings.

Meanwhile Philippe looked dapper in a grey suit and crisp white shirt, teaming it with a blue tie. 

The couple also posed in front of their own portraits, before admiring the others on display.

Queen Mathilde has been married to King Philippe of Belgium for 19 years, who ascended the throne following the abdication of his father, King Albert II, on 21 July 2013. 

They are parents to Princess Elisabeth, 16, Prince Gabriel, 14, Prince Emmanuel, 12, Princess Eleonore, 10.  

Following the abdication of his father, King Albert II, Prince Philippe was sworn in before the combined chambers of parliament on 21 July 2013.

Saturday will mark exactly five years since he was crowned the seventh king of Belgium.

Celebrations on the country's National Day will include a varied programme of festivities, from the Place du Jeu de Balle to Brussels Park, taking in the various districts of Brussels for National Day. 

Independence Day celebrates the separation of Belgium from the Netherlands in 1831, as well as the formal establishment of the Kingdom.
