Study through UniReady

Study through UniReady

The UniReady Enabling Program aims to develop your independent learning skills and prepare you for university study. The program incorporates a high degree of flexibility and responsiveness that caters to students with a wide range of educational backgrounds, ages and experiences.

How will this program help me get into Curtin?

When you complete the program successfully, you’ll be able to apply for entry to certain undergraduate courses at Curtin. When you apply, a ‘notional’ ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) will be calculated from your final grades. This means you’ll fulfil Curtin’s minimum admission criteria of an ATAR of 70 and English language proficiency.

Your score isn’t considered an official ATAR because it’s not awarded through WACE, but it’s recognised by Curtin and TISC as meeting the University’s minimum admission criteria.

How do I complete the program?

The program consists of four units (100 credits) and you must pass each unit to successfully complete the program. You need to enrol in two core units and choose two units from the four optional units:

Unit codeUnit nameCredits
PWRP0001Fundamentals of Academic Writing25
COMS0002Foundations of Communication25
SELECT TWO OPTIONS (see below)50
TOTAL 100
Optional units to select from
HUMN0001Introduction to Humanities25
MGMT0001Introduction to Commerce25
BIOL0001Introduction to Health Sciences25
MATH0003Applying Mathematics25

Your optional unit should relate to your preferred undergraduate course. For example, if you want to study a degree from the Health Sciences faculty, you should complete the Introduction to Health Sciences unit.

If you have completed a Certificate IV or higher you may be eligible for credit towards the two optional units.

Applying for UniReady

There are two types of students studying UniReady, Contribution Exempt students who are in a fully government funded place and pay no student fees, and Domestic Fee-Paying students who have chosen to pay for the course. The government provides a large number of Contribution Exempt places every year, so most students who undertake UniReady do not pay any course fees. Applications for places in the Contribution Exempt course will always open first, and once they are completely filled, applications for Domestic Fee-Paying places open.

UniReady encourages all students to apply for a Contribution Exempt place first, and to consider the Domestic Fee-Paying option as a back-up option should they not be successful in receiving a Contribution Exempt place. Application dates and processes for the Contribution Exempt and Domestic Fee-Paying places are different, and can be found below.

If you have been offered a place in UniReady and you are unsure if you are Contribution Exempt or Domestic Fee-Paying you can check the ‘Liability Category’ on your Letter of Offer.

Contribution Exempt Places

Contribution Exempt places are fully Commonwealth supported, and students are not required to pay any fees. If you want to study UniReady, apply for a Contribution Exempt place.

How to apply

Applying for Semester Two, 2018

Applications open: 16 April 2018
Applications close: 8 June 2018*

*It is strongly recommended you apply as early as possible as we are anticipating a large number of applications and places are limited.

Orientation Week: 23 – 27 July 2018
Semester Two commences: 30 July 2018

For more information about semester dates please refer to the Academic Calendar.

UniReady has a restricted number of contribution exempt places for Semester Two, 2018. It is a popular program and there is typically greater demand than available contribution exempt places. Applications will be assessed based on student equity and needs. Applicants who have been disadvantaged in their previous studies due to circumstances beyond their control, or who are part of an equity group, will be more likely to receive an offer of a place in the government funded contribution exempt program.

If you do not meet any of the educational disadvantage or equity criteria below you can still apply for UniReady. Depending on the number of applicants and places available, contribution exempt places in the program may still be available to students who do not meet the criteria.

Information based on the list below will be captured in your application and will be considered.

  • Socio-economic (SES) background
  • Rural and isolated background
  • Mature-age (20 years and over)
  • Indigenous Australians*

The following three circumstances will be also considered. If any of these apply to you, you will need to complete and submit the Educational Disadvantage form (see Steps to Apply) with the required supporting documentation.

  • Medical issues and disability
  • Financial hardship
  • Home environment and responsibilities

* Note: Indigenous Australians should consider applying for Curtin’s Indigenous Tertiary Enabling Course, as this course is specifically designed for students of Indigenous Background.

Steps to Apply

  1. Consider if you have experienced any of the circumstances that require extra documentation (as per the second list above). If so, you must complete the Application on the basis of Educational Disadvantage form [.pdf 185kB] and email it to equity.uniready@curtin.edu.au along with the required supporting documentation.
    1. We recommend you apply as soon as possible. You do not need to wait until you have arranged your form and supporting documentation. This can be emailed to us any time prior to the application closing date.
  2. Click here to apply for UniReady.
  3. Wait to find out if we are able to offer you a Contribution Exempt place in UniReady.
    1. Please note, we anticipate that offers for the course will be made once applications have closed. Students will receive their offer via email, as well as a SMS notification.
    2. It is important that you check your email (and junk folder) frequently as failure to respond to requests for further information, or formally accept an offer to the course in time, will most likely result in your application being withdrawn.

How much will it cost?

Contribution Exempt students do not have to pay any course fees. However, students are expected to buy essential study materials such as stationery and a calculator, and have access to a computer and reliable internet connection.

Domestic Fee-Paying Places

Domestic Fee-Paying places are not Commonwealth supported and students must pay fees. Apply for a place in the Domestic Fee-Paying course if you were unsuccessful in receiving a Contribution Exempt place but would still like to study UniReady.
