Healthcare Coverage

Healthcare Coverage

For those affected by bleeding disorders, access to affordable, quality health coverage has historically been difficult to obtain and maintain. As a result, many in the community have experienced unnecessary complications and/or acquired co-morbidities. Since 1948, NHF has been committed to ensuring patient access to comprehensive care, safe treatment therapies, and education. The bleeding disorder community has access to coordinated, comprehensive care through a network of federally recognized hemophilia treatment centers (HTCs) that serve as a model of care replicated around the world, and access to safe, effective therapies. The passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) takes another step toward removing the obstacles and barriers that have negatively impacted access to care. The bleeding disorder community recognized an immediate positive impact from many of the market reforms in the ACA, including:

  • Elimination of lifetime or annual limits on essential health benefits
  • Elimination of rescissions in all health plans except in the case of fraud
  • Guaranteed issue and renewal – everyone is guaranteed access to an insurance plan regardless of health status or utilization of health services
  • Elimination of pre-existing conditions for all
  • Extension of coverage for adult children up to age 26
