Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail confirms Emmy-award winning series will end after season four

The Emmy award-winning series Mr. Robot will be ending after it's upcoming fourth season.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, show creator Sam Esmail thanked fans for their continued support of the series.

'When I first created the world of Mr. Robot, I thought it would be a niche television series with a small, cult following. Over the past three years, it has become so much more, and I am continually humbled by the show's recognition and by the amazing cast and crew that work tirelessly to help bring my vision to life.

'Since day one, I've been building toward one conclusion — and in breaking the next season of Mr. Robot, I have decided that conclusion is finally here. Everyone on the creative team, including the amazing people at USA and UCP, didn't want to say goodbye, but we ultimately have too much respect for Elliot's journey to extend past its inevitable ending.

'Therefore, season four will serve as the final chapter of the Mr. Robot story. To fans of the show: thank you for the past three years, and I can't wait to share this exciting final season with you.'

Mr. Robot stars Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson, a computer hacker who suffers from social anxiety disorder and depression.

The critically acclaimed series, which ordinarily has eight episodes per season, will end with an expanded 12 episode order after it premieres next year, according to the website.

The show is set to premiere in 2019, more than a year after the season three finale in December 2017.

Mr. Robot is set to begin filming in New York during the winter.

In order to accommodate for Sam as he writes the Amazon series Homecoming, the upcoming writing schedule has been split into two, adds the site.

Mr. Robot debuted in 2015 to rave reviews.

Though it never enjoyed big numbers in the ratings department, the show received critical acclaim and won an array of awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor for Rami and Outstanding Music Composition For A Series.

Rami has not only won the Emmy, but he has been nominated for a slew of awards for his portrayal of the hacker Elliot.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Rami addressed his character's tendency to hack into just about everybody, describing Elliot as 'a complicated dude.'

'There are moments of altruism but there are also moments that are purely self-indulgent, and whether or not he acknowledges that is something I think he's going to come to terms with in the future.

'Maybe that will lead to a more destructive Elliot or someone who people can latch on and emulate to a certain degree. But I think that's what's so captivating about him is he's very human. In his attempt to be superhuman you realize just how flawed he is and how relatable he is. He's a complicated dude. '
