Last night’s 19 Kids and Counting episode, entitled Jill’s Special Delivery, featured the arrival of son Israel David and all the dramatic events leading up to the birth.

After a painful 70-hour labour and an emergency C-section, Jill and husband Derick Dillard were delighted to finally meet their bundle of joy.

While Jill cradled their 9lbs 10oz newborn son in her arms, the couple shared a kiss and admired the addition to their family.

'It was just overwhelming,' Jill said. 'That was the best thing ever. This is the little guy – big guy – that I’ve waited to see for nine months now and now he’s here.'

'It was just very bonding for all of us as a little family. He’s worth every contraction, every pain that I had.'

'I can’t put into words what I felt when I first saw Israel. I just thought 'I love him',' Derick added.

The special TLC show followed Jill and Derick as they prepared for the arrival of baby Israel and ironed out the details of their home birthing plan.

The pair showed their two midwives around their home, leading them to the bedroom and instructing them where they keep their pots and pans.

“We learned in our childbirth class that you can do a lot of things with your placenta. I thought that’s what these pans were for,” Derick quipped before Jill assured the midwives they would not be cooking it up to eat.

Jill’s parents, Michelle and Jim Bob, were also on hand to help with anything they could, offering advice and donating their daughter Josie’s old crib.

“We are grandparents now and we would love more babies if god saw fit, but that hasn’t happened for a while,” Michelle said.

Derick added: “One of the benefits of marrying into a family with 18 siblings is hand-me-downs.”

Michelle, who has spent a staggering total of 850 hours in labour to bring her 19 children into the world, said: “Each labour and delivery is different and anything can happen, which I have learned having 19 of my own.

“Each one of my deliveries of my babies were different in a lot of aspects. As we went through each labour and delivery we learned a little bit more. I don’t think labour’s ever gotten easier. It’s hard work having a baby.”

The mother-of-19 also opened up about the day she and Jim Bob found out their 20th child had passed away.

“I knew instantly that something was wrong,” Jill said, recalling the ultrasound that broke the tragic news.

“One of the hardest things Jim Bob and I had to go through was when we realised Jubilee had died, our baby died, and then drive back home to all of the children back at the house waiting for us to find out whether it was a boy or a girl,” she added.

“The kids handled it very well. It was almost like they were comforting us,” Jim Bob said.

In the weeks leading up to Israel’s arrival, cameras followed Jill and Derick as they attended their baby shower and enjoyed pedicures with Derick’s mother.

Derick also took his wife to Oklahoma State University and showed her how he used to dress up as the sports teams’ mascot Pistol Pete.

Jill confessed she had to keep reminding herself it was her husband underneath the giant costume, but added approvingly: “Very quickly I was like hmmm, yeah, looks good.”

Last night’s episode also featured Derick’s birthday celebrations, during which he opened up a string of light-hearted gifts to help him with fatherhood.

But the most touching present came from his mother, in the form of a diary entry written by his late father in 1988 – when she was pregnant with Derick.

Reading the excerpt out loud, he said: “I just want you to know some day your daddy was laying on the couch next to your Mom tonight and I said ‘I love you’ right to your head through her tummy and you gave my hand a good, strong kick. It was the first time I got to feel you kick.”

Derick had tears in his eyes after reading the passage and the other family members could not contain their emotion.

Jill’s waters finally broke when she was 11 days past her due date. But their plan for a home birth had to be scrapped when it emerged their baby was in mild fetal distress.

After more hours of labour at the hospital, a doctor informed them Israel was now in a breech position and Jill was rushed into surgery for a C-section.

With her father, sisters and brother waiting – and praying - nervously at home, Jill gave birth to Israel David Dillard on April 26 at 11.49pm. He weighed 9lbs 10oz.

When Jill and Derick took baby Israel home to meet Jill’s family, it looked like they could be set to follow in her parents’ footsteps.

“Can we have another one?” Derick asked as he admired his newborn son.

“Yes, yes, yes!” Jill said excitedly. “He’s adorable, we have to have more.”
