You can study a free English course if you are new to Australia and do not speak or write very well.
These free courses are offered under the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).
Who can apply
To learn English under the program you must:
- be a permanent resident visa holder
- or have a temporary visa.

If you are under 18 years of age
You may be able to study an English course if you are 15 to 18 years of age.

When you can apply
You should apply as soon as you can.
Although there are deadlines, you might still be able to apply.

Where you can study
You can learn English under the program across Australia. This includes in cities, towns and regional areas.

What you can get
You can learn English for the workplace or to help take part in the community.
The program runs for 510 hours. You might be able to do more study — talk to your AMEP service provider.
How you can study
You can learn English under the program:
- part-time or full-time
- in a class or have a volunteer tutor come to you
- online using your phone or laptop
- at night or on the weekend, depending on what providers offer in your area.
If you have young children
You can get free child care if your children are too young for school.
Free child care is only available for the times when you are in class.
