Early
2009, the Serbian defense Company Yugoimport had completed the prototype
of a new Multi-Role Armoured Combat Vehicle (MRACV) called Lazar. The
Lazar BTR-DR-8808 8x8 is a multi-purpose armored vehicle designed following
modern world trends in the development of a family of wheeled armoured
vehicles intended for carrying out of a number of tactical tasks in
different armed conflicts. The concept and technical solutions of the
vehicle are especially adjusted to the requirements of modern infantry
units and sepcial units engaged in carrying out of the tasks of antiterrorist
and peace keeping actions. Special accent is made on vehicle actions
in urban conditions, inhabited areas and cross-country, against enemy
ambushes, anti-tank mines, improvised explosives devices, etc. The vehicle
practically represents modern vehicle of MRAP class (Mine Resistant
Ambush Protected vehicle) with certain characteristics (such as high
mobility and fire power) of the vehicle class MRAV (Multi Role Armored
Vehicle), which combines the basic characteristics of the two classes
of modern wheeled armoured vehicles exceptionally important in the world
today.
In the LAZAR
design concept special accent has been made on the development of its
high mobility, armour protection system, armament system, and the possibility
of transport of 10 soldiers and the possibility of their quick dismemberment
and embankment from protected positions via back door. The passenger
compartment is designed so as to provide for the soldiers to be oriented
toward large windows made of ballistic glass, and towards gun holes,
thus enabling them excellent visibility and survey of the surrounding
environment and their combat engagement by using of their personal armament.

Armament |
Various
weapon stations can be mounted to the LAZAR. The vehicle weapons
are installed in the space behind the driver and the commander,
and in front of the embankment crew compartment. There are
few optional weapon system concepts.
•
Light one man turret with 12.7 mm M87 machine-gun, coaxial
7.62 mm M86 machine-gun and 4 • smoke pot launchers.
• Light one man turret with 20 mm M55 automatic cannon,
coaxial 7.62 mm M86 machine-gun and 4 smoke pot launchers.
• Remote controlled overhead weapon station with 12.7
mm M87 machine-gun and 4 smoke pot launchers.
• Two axis stabilized one man • turret M-91 with
30mm M86 automatic gun, coaxial 7.62 mm M86 machine gun, ATGM
subsystem Malyutka and 4 smoke pot launchers.
• Modular armoured gun mount M06 which can be fitted
depending on vehicle application and the given tactical scenario
with: 7.62 mm infantry machinegun M84 in the infantry variant
or 7.62 mm M86A machine gun with electric triggering or 12.7
mm machine gun M87 or 30 mm M93
• Automatic grenade launcher or 20 mm M55 automatic
gun.
Total combat weight of the turret/weapon station/gun-mount
is from 400 kg up to two tons, while the bearing diameter
is from 640 mm up to 1600 mm, depending allied armament.

Design
and Protection |
High
level of armour protection of LAZAR is achieved by application
of armoured body produced of armour piercing steel which, together
with ballistic glass, basically provides for ballistic protection
in accordance with STANAG 4569 standard of grade III+ (12.7x108mm
b-32 from 100m) on the front side and grade II on all other
sides of the vehicle. Application of combined additional armour
of complex composite construction mounted on top of the basic
armour provides for ballistic protection of grade V on the front
side and grade IV on all other sides of the vehicle.
Introduction of reactive explosive armour system mounted on
combined additional armour provides for effective protection
against infantry armour piercing weapons of class RPG-7 which
represent major threat to the above mentioned categories of
combat. Additional bottom part of the armoured body is V shape
and provides for protection against explosion of antitank mines
and improvised explosive devices underneath the vehicle wheels
and vehicle floor. The design of armoured body provides for
fast installation and replacement of additional armour, and
the installation of the same does not degrade basic functions
of the vehicle. |
Mobility |
The
Lazar is equipped with a high mobility chassis 8 x 8, and motorized
with a 440 HP power engine, coupled to a mechanical synchronized
gearbox. The suspension is composed by a 2 x 2 tandem axles,
with leaf springs and shock absorbers. The design concept of
drive and suspension of the vehicle, based on long-time studying
and modelling of possible technical solutions, a principle of
application of 8x8 formula has been chosen, with rigid bridges
and springs which, at the same time, provides for high level
of protection against anti-tank mines and improvised explosive
devices, and high level of manoeuvrability outside regular roads.
Central tire pressure regulation system is installed in the
vehicle, and run-flat inserts may be installed into the tires
which provide for driving of the vehicle even with damaged tires.
|
Accessories |
The Lazar
is equipped with central pressure regulation system for the
tyres. Command information system (KIS) with GPS based navigation.
Panoramic optoelectronic reconnaissance observation station,
stabilized in two planes, fitted with CCD TV camera, thermal
imaging camera and laser rangefinder.
