The European Space Agency's Mars Express has returned an incredible new series of images showing the Korolev crater, a 50 mile (82 km) wide feature in in the northern lowlands of Mars. Its center contains a mound of water ice some 1.1 miles thick all year round. This ever-icy presence is due to a phenomenon known as a ‘cold trap’ caused by the crater’s floor lying two kilometres vertically beneath its rim. Inset, a
InSight gets to work as NASA's lander lifts its seismometer onto the Martian surface in bid to solve the mystery of 'Marsquakes'
NASA's InSight lander has deployed its first instrument onto the surface of Mars. New images (pictured) from the lander show the seismometer on the ground, after it was lifted onto the surface by the lander's robotic arm. It will record the waves traveling through the interior structure of the planet, and could help explain mysterious 'marsquakes' scientists believe occur regularly.
Killer lasers, jammers and trackers: The cutting edge technology police are using in the hunt for Gatwick's drone of misery... so why haven't they found it already?
The criminal who is illegally flying a drone at Gatwick Airport (top right) is being hunted by police and military personnel (left) using cutting-edge technology, including lasers, snipers, triangulation and jammers. The Army has been working on a 'Drone Dome' or 'kill-jammer' - which can 'soft kill' a drone by knocking out its communications or a 'hard kill' by shooting it down with a laser from up to two miles away - and may use this prototypical technology. It remains unknown when the debacle that has left hundreds of travellers stranded (bottom right) will end and normal service will be resumed.
Home for Christmas: Three astronauts return from space after six-month stint marred by air leak, mysterious hole and rocket failure
Three astronauts returned to Earth Thursday after more than six months aboard the International Space Station. The astronauts landed safely in a descent capsule in Kazakhstan yesterday. Sergey Prokopyev, pictured right, landed safely in the capsule, top right and inset, which had been charred by the fiery trip through the atmosphere. The cosmonauts were then given medical examinations, bottom right.

The GEMSTONE planet: Researchers reveal 'shimmering' super-Earth 21 light years away that could be covered in sapphires and rubies
Researchers have discovered a unique 'shimmering' planet they say could be a new class of exoplanet. Officially known as HD219134 b. it is 21 light years away from us in the constellation Cassiopeia. Astronomers say unlike Earth, it most likely does not have a massive core of iron, but is rich in calcium and aluminium which makes it incredibly rich in gemstones.
Fossilized tooth reveals prehistoric aerial battle as an eight foot shark leapt out of the sea to bring down a far larger pterosaur
Researchers have revealed astonishing evidence of a ferocious mid air battle between a shark and a pterosaur. USC researchers studying bones at the L.A. County Natural History Museum, were shocked to find a fossil from the fearsome flying reptile that had a shark tooth lodged in it (top and bottom left). They believe the find is the result of a fearsome shark six feet long leaping into the air to try and take down the much larger pterosaur with a wingspan of 18 feet.
The arteries of the world: Fascinating new map shows EVERY river basin on the globe color-coded by depth
The guide, created by analyst Robert Szucs, 31, from Birmingham, shows every river basin represented by a different colour, which is contrasted with a dark, black background. He mapped the entire world, (top right) - including Great Britain (left) and the United States (bottom right). Mr Szucs collects his data with painstaking patience, assembling information from a variety of government and non-government agencies. The Hungarian native has no previous artistic background but says he was inspired by the 'boring nature' of textbooks. He has created a system whereby the thicker lines represent higher stream orders. It's a long process but Robert is adamant it's worth it.

NASA reveals the 'Martian rock garden' it built in a Pasadena warehouse to perfectly replicate the Martian surface where its InSight craft landed
Workers at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, are using a replica of the lander, named ForeSight, to test every command they send to the red planet. Engineers painstakingly recreated the landing area of craft from high resolution pictures it send back, using crushed rocks to simulate Martian sand.
Burst dam reveals ancient Turkish village that was hidden for DECADES - complete with long forgotten mosque, madrasa, graveyards and shrine
The remarkable structures (pictured are gravestones) were found in Carikoren Neigbourhood in the Egil district of Diyarbakir, Turkey on Tuesday when one of Dicle Dam's gates broke off following heavy rainfall. The dam, which opened in 1997, now provides drinking water for the city of Diyarbakir - one of the largest cities in southeastern Turkey with a population of around 930,000. Incredible images show remarkable structures hidden away underneath, including a Tomb of Elisha - a prophet in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
NASA engineer comes up with epic revenge package to catch Amazon delivery thieves complete with a glitter bomb, fart spray, GPS and cameras to catch their reactions
An alleged thief stole a NASA engineer's package, and he came up with an epic revenge by designing a fake Amazon box complete with GPS, a glitter bomb, a stink bomb and hidden cellphones to record their reaction. Mark Rober said a woman was caught on his home security camera walking up to his door and stealing a package off of his porch. When he brought the video to the police, they said it wasn't worth their time to investigate it, so he decided to take matters into his own hands. What he came up with was a package that, from all appearances, looked like an Apple HomePod with an Amazon sticker on it. However inside is actually a high-tech box with a cup filled with glitter, a trigger to release it, a fart spray that whirls up and emits a stench every 30-seconds once the package is opened, and four hidden cell phones capturing the would be thieves' reaction from every possible angle, regardless of where the box is opened from.

Incredible pictures capture moment Mount Etna erupts sending lava and huge columns of gas into night sky
The images (pictured) show the moment molten lava began to trickle down the side of Europe's most famous volcano, located in Sicily, which is a whopping 700,000-years-old and 24 miles wide. Each year, it produces enough lava to fill a 108-story skyscrapers, spewing tonnes of molten rock across the island of Sicily. Explosive activity continues at the eastern vent of the Southeast Crater. The craters of Bocca Nuova and Cratere di Nordest are also active.
LG set to finally start selling radical TV you can ROLL UP like a poster (but won't say how much it will cost)
LG has not said how much the radical TV will cost. In 2016, the firm announced the world’s first 18-inch rollable display at CES in Las Vegas – and last year, showed off a 65inch version. 'The envisioned 65-inch TVs will retract automatically at the touch of a button like a garage door, the person said on condition of anonymity because it’s an internal matter,' wrote Bloomberg.
Whacky racer! World's first JET-POWERED Smart car can hit speeds of 220mph with its fire-breathing turbo engine - and it's street legal
Bill Berg put a 2,000 horsepower helicopter engine in his tiny electric vehicle to make the world's first jet-powered Smart car (pictured). The 'jet car' is a standard 2008 model capable of reaching 220mph, with a high performance General Electric T58-GE03 gas turbine engine. Owner Bill Berg from Colorado has managed to keep the vehicle street-legal, and now he loves nothing more than travelling the world showing off his latest prized asset. His modifications mean the Smart car can do around 160 to 170mph in about nine seconds on a race track.
The most-distant solar system object ever observed: 'Farout' pink dwarf planet more than 120 times farther than Earth is from the Sun could shed new light on Planet X
Astronomers have discovered the most distant body ever observed in our Solar System. It is the first known Solar System object that has been detected at a distance that is more than 100 times farther than Earth is from the Sun. Nicknamed 'Farout', the new object was announced by the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center and has been given the provisional designation 2018 VG18.
Saturn is losing its rings: NASA study finds they will have completely disappeared in 100 million years
The rings are being pulled into Saturn by gravity as a dusty rain of ice particles, a new NASA study has revealed. The rings are being pulled into Saturn by gravity as a dusty rain of ice particles under the influence of Saturn’s magnetic field. 'We estimate that this 'ring rain' drains an amount of water products that could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool from Saturn's rings in half an hour,' said James O'Donoghue of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
Shocking moment food delivery robot bursts into flames on Berkeley campus after it is fitted with a faulty battery
A roving delivery robot made the mistake of dropping off a student's takeout order well-done after it caught fire at the University of California, Berkeley. A 30-second clip of the incident shows people looking on, many with their phones pulled out, watching idly as the four-wheeled droid burns, until a passerby finally puts out the flames with a fire extinguisher. Kiwi Campus, the startup behind the device, later explained that the mishap was due to 'human error' and that it was removing all of its other robots from operation until it resolved an issue with the device's defective battery.
Richard Branson claims he’ll take his first spaceflight ‘within 6 MONTHS,' after Virgin Galactic’s tourist rocket completes its first ever trip to the edge of space with crew on board
Virgin Galactic has reached the edge of space for the first time, in a milestone accomplishment for Richard Branson's space tourism endeavors. The aerospace firm's SpaceShipTwo craft reached a boundary more than 50 miles above Earth on Thursday morning after blasting off on a critical flight test in the Mojave Desert. To do this, the company had to push its rocket motor to the longest burn duration yet, 'resulting in us going higher than we have before.' Virgin Galactic's WhiteKnightTwo mothership took off shortly after 10 a.m. (ET) from the Mojave airstrip carrying SpaceShipTwo.
Egypt unveils 'one of a kind' 4,400-year-old tomb of ancient high priest
Egyptian archaeologists have discovered the tomb of a priest decorated with hieroglyphs and statues dating back more than 4,400 years in a pyramid complex. The private tomb belonging to 'Wahtye', a high priest who served during the fifth dynasty reign of King Neferirkare, was unearthed in a buried ridge at the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, south of the capital Cairo. His brightly painted tomb is decorated with scenes showing the royal priest alongside his mother, wife and other members of his family, the Egyptian antiquities ministry said. It also contains more than a dozen niches and 24 colourful statues of the cleric and members of his family.
In the footsteps of giants: 'Treasure trove' haul of 145 MILLION year old dinosaur footprints reveals 'skin, scales and claws' in the two-foot-wide imprints discovered as Britain's south coast crumbles away
Researchers identified these historical findings between 2014 and 2018 following periods of coastal erosion along the cliffs (inset) near Hastings, East Sussex. More than 85 footprints made up of at least seven different species (such as the three-toed theropods pictured left) were found which include fine detail of skin and scales. An ankylosaur dinosaur's footprint (bottom right) is so well-preserved it even shows the claws. University of Cambridge researchers said it is likely there are many more footprints (top right from a small carnivorous theropod) hidden within the eroding cliffs of East Sussex.
Walking on sunshine! NASA has taken the closest image EVER of the sun with the Parker Solar Probe which is currently 133 MILLION miles closer to the star than we are
NASA's Parker Solar probe snapped the image from behind its revolutionary heat shield. The mission launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket in August. The craft is named for Dr Eugene Parker, who first predicted the existence of solar wind back in 1958, and is the only living person to have ever had a NASA mission named for them. Mercury can be seen as a bright blob in the centre of the image and a coronal streamer - structures of solar material near highly active regions of the sun - can be seen as a bright streak across the image.
