On 27 December 2018, South Korea's Army announced it will launch a new research institute on artificial intelligence (AI) this week in a bid to capitalize on cutting-edge technologies for future combat operations.

During the European Land Robot Trial (ELROB) event that was held in Belgium from 24 to 28 September 2018, the Finnish Company Patria has demonstrated a new unmanned version of a full digitalised AMV, 8x8 armored multirole vehicle. In Belgium, a test drive of European robotic vehicles revealed that Patria is at the forefront of developing the new technology.

MOHOC, Inc., creator of the world’s first military-optimized helmet cameras, has been awarded two NATO/National Stock Numbers (NSNs) for its MOHOC Camera and MOHOC IR Camera (infrared model) by the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) following requests from multiple NATO Member States.

U.S. Space Command will be the U.S. military’s 11th unified combatant command, Vice President Mike Pence announced on 18 December 2018 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. “It will serve alongside other functional commands like Strategic Command and Special Operations Command, and it will be led by a four-star flag officer,” Pence said. “It will establish unified control over all our military space operations.”

The original rapid-deploy anti-vehicle and electric barrier fencing system – first used in tandem on the London 2012 Olympics – has been enhanced for more rapid deployment and easier roll out with pre-configured ‘ends’ to pulse-protected ‘zones’. Three leading names in perimeter security have collaborated to incorporate the new rapid-deploy electric fence technology into the established SecureGuard HVM temporary barrier fencing system.

Smart watches have been handed out to soldiers of the People's Liberation Army, reports the PLA Daily. Developed by the PLA Navy, the smart watches are equipped with smart verification systems, electronic compasses, BeiDou satellite navigation and other remote receivers.

On 5 December 2018, representatives of the Federal Agency for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Federal Armed Forces (BAAINBw) and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG (KMW) signed the contract to convert 18 more rocket launchers M270 MARS in MARS II. A first batch had already been converted in 2013. The budget allocated for this second wave of conversions is about 18 million €.
