His ex-girlfriend Katy Perry hailed him her greatest lover in an interview earlier this year.

But John Mayer chose not to reciprocate the compliment when asked the same question on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live on Monday.

The 40-year-old Gravity singer squirmed as he said: 'What's the way out of this?' before pointing to his head and saying, 'Right here'.

In June Perry, 33, was asked by TV host James Corden to rank three exes - Diplo, Orlando Bloom, and Mayer - from best to worst in bed.

'They’re all amazing lovers, and I would have sex with all of them after I get out of this place,' she declared.

When pushed, she named Diplo third, recent ex Orlando Bloom as second, and gave Mayer the top spot.

Mayer also confessed that he watched his ex's live stream over the summer, a continuous feed which allowed her fans to watch her daily activities for 96 hours, to promote her fifth album Witness.

Asked by Cohen if he tuned in and what he thought of it, he replied: 'Yeah, I did. I think you'd have to watch all 96 hours to get the final verdict. That's her thing, man - to go big and bold.

'Yeah, I checked in with it. It's definitely odd to watch your ex-girlfriend asleep.'

Mayer explained that he wouldn't want to lie about checking-in on his ex and tries to be transparent when it comes to his communications.

He added: 'The way I see things now, I call it 'stand in the middle of the boat.' If someone says, "I don't watch that," it's like, "Yes, you do." You know? Watch when you want to watch it. Be human about it.'

The Free Fallin' singer also revealed he texted the songstress to wish her Happy Birthday last month.

Keeping it real: Mayer added 'how weird is it to be like, "I want to say happy birthday now, but I'm going to wait until tomorrow afternoon?". Be a person, man.'

He said: 'It's like, if you want to text someone ... I texted Katy happy birthday. It was four in the morning. It was like a post-midnight, haven't-gone-to-sleep-yet, it's-technically-your-birthday send.

'Because how weird is it to be like, "I want to say happy birthday now, but I'm going to wait until tomorrow afternoon?". Be a person, man.'

Mayer dated Perry on and off for around two years from 2012 to 2014 before her romance with Orlando Bloom.
