The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning. At Ayon International, environment encourages young children to play because they feel relaxed, comfortable and ‘at home’. When children feel emotionally safe and secure they are able to explore and find out about the place they are in and the things they can see, touch, maneuver or manipulate. A well planned, organised and resourced environment ensures that children have a rich, stimulating experience and make decisions for themselves.
At Ayon International we focus on three aspects of environment: The emotional environment, the outdoor environment and the indoor environment.
Being outdoors has a positive impact on children’s sense of well-being and helps all aspects of children’s development. It offers opportunities for doing things in different ways and on different scales. It also gives children first-hand contact with weather, seasons and the natural world and teaches them respect for nature and the surrounding environment. It also promotes awareness towards recycling. Outdoor environments offer children freedom to explore, use their senses, and be physically active and exuberant.
The secure Garden Area at Ayon International is a valuable teaching area for the staff, which recognises outdoor play is an intrinsic part of a young child’s development. We are outside every day irrespective of the weather.
Here indoor environment provides a safe, secure yet challenging space for children. For some children, the indoor environment is like a second ‘home’, providing a place for activity, rest, eating and sleeping. The indoor environment contains resources which are appropriate, well maintained and accessible for all children. At Ayon International indoor spaces are planned in an exciting way so that they can be used flexibly for an appropriate range of activities.
Here emotional environment is created by all the people, and teachers ensure that it is warm and accepting for everyone. Teachers empathise with children and support their emotions. When children feel confident in the environment they are willing to try things out, knowing that effort is valued. When children know that their feelings are accepted they learn to express them, confident that adults will help them with how they are feeling.
