Where your donation goes
Technology: We preserve 66 billion URLS per year in the Wayback Machine! We’ve saved 45 petabytes (that’s 45,000,000,000,000,000 bytes) of data. That takes a lot of servers, bandwidth and power. The cost of storing information in our data centers is a fraction of the cost of Amazon Cloud.
Staff: Most top websites employ huge staffs. We employ 150 people around the world—engineers, archivists, librarians and book scanners. Most of our staff could be making much more at a company driven by profit, but they choose to work for a nonprofit powered by a huge mission.
Projects:
We are gearing up to digitize 500,000 books per year and make them available to readers worldwide through Open Libraries, creating the equivalent of a great modern urban library online.
How do we create new apps that aren’t creepy? We’re convening developers around the world to build a Decentralized Web—without the centralized points of control that make it easy to censor or spy on you.
