Season chronology |
Pinoy Big Brother: Otso is the eighth main season of the Philippine ABS-CBN reality television series Pinoy Big Brother and the fourteenth season overall. This is also the fourth special edition of Pinoy Big Brother because it featured adult civilians and teenagers taking part in the same season. The season premiered on November 10, 2018 on ABS-CBN with Toni Gonzaga and Robi Domingo reprising their roles as hosts.[1] Alex Gonzaga, who hosted All In, returns to the show together with former winners Kim Chiu (of Teen Edition 1) and Melai Cantiveros (of Double Up) as new hosts. Bianca Gonzalez returns the show reprising her role as host upon the entry of the first adult batch of star dreamers.[2]
Development[edit]
Auditions[edit]
Auditions for this season has been part of Star Hunt: The Grand Kapamilya Auditions, ABS-CBN's auditions caravan, which started on April 20, 2018.[3] 55,373 auditionees took part,[4] auditioning for other upcoming reality shows like The Voice of the Philippines, Pilipinas Got Talent, and World of Dance Philippines. Several potential housemates have been featured in Star Hunt's companion show.
Other content[edit]
Pinoy Big Brother: Otso Gold returns as a companion show on November 12, 2018, as part of the Kapamilya Gold block. There will be a house livestream on iWant and TFC Online, and an additional online show called PBB Bring 8 On!.[4]
An online show, YouthTube, which is hosted by him, and Bianca Gonzales commenced on November 22, 2018. It talks about the different issues that arise in the house, particularly in the first batch of teen housemates.
Overview[edit]
Logo change and subtitle[edit]
The Otso in the season title is a Filipino language rendering of the Spanish word ocho ("eight"), indicating the season number. This season saw another logo change from the previous season: an eye logo using motifs from the Philippine flag, atop the show's title and enclosed by an outline of a house.
House changes[edit]
This season showed a major revamp in the house layout. On September 7, 2018, Director Laurenti Dyogi made a vlog about the reconstruction of the house.[5] The new house design was finally unveiled on November 7, 2018 during its house blessing.[6] Several housemates from previous seasons have visited the house and have taken pictures for their social media accounts. Official house photos were released on their Facebook page on November 10, 2018.[7] The management opened its doors to 888 visitors to tour the House for 8 minutes on November 10, 2018.
From his livestream, Dyogi has stated that the show has upgraded to using HD PTZ cameras,[4] making Otso the first season to fully broadcast in HD and 16:9 aspect ratio (Lucky 7's Vietnam leg was shown in 16:9, but the show reverted to 4:3 upon the housemates' return to the Philippines). It is worth noting that the one-way mirror system, used in earlier seasons for cameramen to capture events in the house, is no longer present.[8]
Show format[edit]
Since its official announcement on October 20, 2018, much information about this season has not been made public until November 9, 2018, where Dyogi published a livestream talking about it.[4]
It's been confirmed that this season will be another special season. There will be four batches of housemates coming in to the house, in the following order: teen housemates, adult housemates, another batch of teen housemates, and another batch of adult housemates. Each batch will consist of 8 housemates only. At the start of each batch's stay in the house, 16 people from the shortlist, also known as Star Dreamers, will compete to get the eight spots for that batch. Star Dreamers who weren't successful in being selected will be sent to Camp Star Hunt, where they will be waiting for their chance to be an official housemate. As one housemate goes out of the house, one Star Dreamer will be replacing their spot, returning the number of official housemates inside the house to eight. A new Star Dreamer will be introduced, also to return the number of people staying at the Camp to eight. Each batch will spend eight weeks in the house. At the end of eight weeks, one winner will be picked for that batch. This format will continue for the remaining batches until there are four winners, one for each batch. These four winners will go back in the house, along with four housemates from previous batches chosen via public voting, to form another set of eight housemates. From this final set, the grand winner (dubbed as the Ultim8 Big Winner) for this season will be named.[9][10]
This format will make this season's run longer than Lucky 7, as this will last at least 40 weeks. (Adult 1 Is 88 Days) Ex-housemates from previous seasons will also be part of the show. They are a part of selecting official housemates for each batch. They are also hosting exclusive online livestream on the show's YouTube channel and Facebook page. Their involvement in other aspects of the show will be known in the coming days.
On February 3, 2019, a change was made for the first Adult batch wherein the batch's stay in the House was extended from 8 weeks to 88 days (equivalent to 12 weeks and 4 days).
Twists[edit]
Aside from the twist to the show's format, the following are the highlighted twists that had occurred during the run of this season: Star Dreamers: On the launch night, 16 Potential Shortlist Housemates officially called as "Star Dreamers" were introduced on the live launch wherein they must undergo through the Housemate Selection twist in order to earn the "official housemate" status. Only 8 of these Star Dreamers would become an official housemate.
- Star Dreamers – Are shortlisted auditionees who are housed in the Camp Star Hunt.
- Camp Star Hunt – A special area where 8 Star Dreamers would live, and fight for their place to become an official housemate.
- Ultim8 Batch – The final batch of housemates (who are composed of 4 winners of their respective batches and 4 wildcard housemates) who will battle to become the season's Ultim8 Big Winner.
- Big Celebr8ty Challenge – Several previous housemates and celebrities visited the house to participate in the housemates' tasks through mentoring or judging their performances. This was used in the first Teen batch of housemates and was aired always every Saturday.
- Big8ting Linggo – week as the nomination and eviction happens in one night. Upon the entry of the first Adult batch, the original weekend format returned.
- Housemates vs. Star Dreamers challenges:
- Decem-Versus Challenge – A competition between the housemates against the Star Dreamers of Camp Star Hunt. If the housemates got defeated by the Camp Star Hunt, there would be a double eviction and two Star Dreamers would crossover to the house. If the housemates wins at least one challenge against the Camp, only one housemate would be evicted and only one Star Dreamer would enter at the end of the week.
- Pinoy Big Battle – A competition between the housemates against the Star Dreamers of Camp Star Hunt. If the housemates will win the challenge all of them will be immune from eviction. But if they fail to win the challenge, two star dreamers from the Camp will crossover to the House.
- Big Jump Challenge – Housemates had to participate in various challenges in order to continue their journey and to earn a spot in the Big 4.
- Do-or-Die LigTask Challenge – Nominated housemates will undergo several challenges to save themselves from evictions. These will serve as an eviction process for the nominated housemates.
- Duel Challenge – similar to the challenge mentioned above, but the housemates were not informed that the challenges were for the nominations and not for determination of the batch's Big 4.
- 2-in-1 Housemates – Two housemates who are related biologically are joined as one competing housemate, as assigned by Big Brother.
- Celebrity Star Player – A celebrity, in a special task, enters the Camp and tests the housemates.
- House Challengers- 4 Ex Housemates return along with other 4 stardreamers to test the housemates patient, skills, and strategy.
Housemates[edit]
On launch night on Days 1 and 2, official housemates were determined, from the chosen Star Dreamers from Star Hunt, through a series of challenges, by the council, and by the public. The council consists of past winners: season 1's Nene Tamayo, Celebrity 1's Keanna Reeves, Celebrity 2's Ruben Gonzaga, Teen Edition Plus's Ejay Falcon, Teen Edition 4's Myrtle Sarrosa, All In's Daniel Matsunaga, 737's Jimboy Martin, and Lucky 7's Maymay Entrata. On Day 2, three winners from the council were replaced by three ex-housemates: All In's Loisa Andalio, 737's Barbie Imperial, and Lucky 7's Edward Barber. The public chose a housemate through voting; the one with the most votes will become a housemate.
Below is a table of official housemates, and a collapsed table for shortlisted Star Dreamers staying at Camp Star Hunt.

On Day 55, Shawntel and Thea crossovered to the Big Brother House as the official housemates; it was revealed that after the two's crossover, there will be no new additional Star Dreamers that will enter the Camp. Later on, Aljur Abrenica entered the Camp as a Celebrity Star Player.
On Day 62, Ex-housemates Abi, JC, Tori, and Wakim entered Camp Star Hunt to become House Challengers, with the other Star Dreamers being announced as House Challengers on the next day.

- #1: Star Dreamers are to form the provided illustration of a key by stacking crayons.
- #2: Star Dreamers are to run a carinderia and must sell their chosen dishes to the public. The team with the highest sales and with a point from the carinderia manager wins the task. Prior to the task, they must prepare and serve their dishes to the housemates for a taste test.

- #4: Star Dreamers are to run a free hair and make-up salon.
- #5: Star Dreamers are to become kiddie party entertainers.
- #6: Star Dreamers are to become wet market fish vendors.

- Notes
- ^ Colors indicate the division of Star Dreamers. The winning camp's advantage is that the first four housemates will come from their group. The other four housemates came from the losing camp.
- ^ Colors which team won the Camp Carenderia challenge. Boom Sherep Eatery was composed of Marie, Mary Grace, Shawntel, Thea and Tori; on the other hand, T8sty Boys Bulalohan was composed of Hanie, JC, Mark and Patrick. The latter group won after garnering two points: one point from earning the most sales and another point from the Carenderia manager.
- ^ Marie and Thea became part of the bottom two after garnering the least points in the week's job task and had lost the tasks for three consecutive times. The other six were able get the six most top points. The Star Dreamers voted to save one of them from dismissal with the one garnering the least save votes being dismissed.
- ^ The House Challengers were tasked to formulate questions that would determine if the remaining housemates are worthy enough to become part of their Batch's Big Four; they will all become part of the Tapatan Panelist. Ex-housemates Hanie, Mark O., Mary Grace, Mitch and Apey also joined the House Challengers as five of the Tapatan Panelist.

Legend
- Housemate received immunity after winning, or finishing a task
- Housemate received automatic nomination for violation of rules, or failure of task
- Notes
- ^ During the first nominations, all the nomination points were given to Apey and none to Mark. However, since both are considered 2-in-1 housemates a nomination for one is a nomination for the other.
- ^ On Day 27, after gaining the public's and the housemates' vote, Apey & Mark were eventually separated as a 2-in-1 housemate (for details with the results, see 2-in-1 vote results).
- ^ Wakim was automatically nominated after he had earned the most number of violations (11 violations) in the House.
- ^ Tori is exempt from the nominations since she is a new housemate.
- ^ Mary Grace is exempt from the nominations since she is a new housemate.
- ^ JC is exempt from the nominations since he is a new housemate. No nominations are up for this week as the nominees for this week will based upon the housemates' performance for this week's weekly task. This was also a double eviction.
- ^ The housemates had to participate in Duel Challenge, wherein the losing housemates were automatically evicted as told by Big Brother. But unknown to them, the losing housemates were only fakedly evicted, not knowing that their stay in the House were extended from 8 weeks to 88 days (or roughly more than 12 weeks). Yamyam, JC, Lou and Fumiya were automatically nominated after losing their respective challenges to Mark, Hanie, Mary Grace and Andre.
- ^ The result of the Ulim8 Pinoy Big Battle against the Star Dreamers was determined if the housemates were be saved from the eviction or not. As Camp Star Hunt won, the Housemates faced a double eviction. Thea, as team leader of the housemates, was automatically nominated as a result. Conversely, Shawntel as the leader of Camp Star Hunt, was immune from nominations.
- ^ As Andre and Shawntel were leaders of Camp Star Hunt and lost the 2nd Pinoy Big Battle, they were automatically nominated. Camille and Kim as leaders of the Housemates, were immune from being nominated for winning.
- ^ Fumiya was automatically nominated after he and Yamyam lost the first Big Jump challenge. Andre and Lou, as winners of the second Big Jump Challenge were immune from eviction. Everyone else was nominated. This was a double eviction.
- ^ Voting for the Big Four started on Day 78 and the results will be announced on March 27.
- ^ Voting for the Batch Winner will start after the Big Four is revealed.
2-in-1 vote results[edit]
On Day 27, within 88 minutes after the eviction night episode, the housemates and the public voted in whether Apey & Mark should continue as a 2-in-1 housemate. The table below were the official results of the poll and was revealed on Day 28. However, Apey & Mark were earlier informed of the possible split of the two. They were briefed that after 88 minutes, the two will know the results through the lamp posts placed in the pool area. With one already lit, if another lamp post will be lit, it would mean that they will be separated as individual housemates. After the said period, the second lamp posts was lit indicating their separation from being a 2-in-1 housemate.
Housemates' vote | Public's vote | Total vote | |
---|---|---|---|
Yes | 8.4% | 15.4% | 23.8% |
