Description

The M1991 is a 240mm Multiple Rocket Launcher System (MRLS) uses by the North Korean Armed Forces. The vehicle was first seen in 1991 and received the name of M-1991 which indicates the year that it was first observed by United States intelligence. The system fires the same 240 mm calibre unguided rockets as the M1985 and has similar HE, smoke, incendiary and chemical warhead capabilities. The M-1991 is only used by the North Korean army. In February 2012, North Korea announced an upgrade the previous model of its 240-millimeter rocket launchers, and named them 'Juche 100 Guns,' after the North's primary ideology of self-reliance. North Korea is expected to unveil the Juche 100 to the public during a massive military parade on April 15, 2012, during the 100th birthday of the North's founder Kim Il-sung.

Armament

M1991 MRLS has 22 launching tubes and fires the same 240-mm rockets as the M-1985 MRLS. The rockets launcher system is mounted at the rear of the truck chassis just behind the crew cab. The M-1991 rocket pack is easily identified as it has 2 rows of 8 tubes and 1 row of 6 tubes. It has various warhead capabilities, including HE-FRAG, smoke, incendiary and chemical. A standard HE-FRAG warhead weights 90 kg and contains 45 kg of explosives. Before firing, four stabilizers are lowered to the ground; these are positioned one either side at the rear, and one at the left and right of the vehicle A claimed maximum range of fire is 43 km. The maximum range is 30 km, and now 60 km for the new version Juche 100.

Design
The cabin truck of M1991 MRLS is not protected. As the other MRLS, the crew cab accommodates the launch preparation and firing equipment.
Truck
The M-1991 is mounted on a 6 x 6 truck chassis. The 6 × 6 forward control cross-country truck chassis, on which this system is based, is probably an imported vehicle.
Combat use
M1991 Multiple Rocket launcher System is assigned to MRLS battalions comprising three batteries, each of five 240 mm MRLs.
