'We do two week shifts and then we go home and recharge the batteries': Metallica drummer reveals how the US rockers overcome mental health struggles... ahead of Australian WorldWired tour

American heavy metal rockers, Metallica will bring their WorldWired tour to Australia and New Zealand later this year. 

Ahead of their five-city tour, Metallica drummer, Lars Ulrich, 55, has revealed how he and his bandmates James Hetfield, 55, Kirk Hammett, 56, and Rob Trujillo, 54, take care of their mental health while they're on the road.  

Speaking to The Courier Mail after the last concert of the North American leg of Metallica's tour, Lars said: 'We do two week shifts and then we go home and recharge the batteries.'

'The great thing about this model is you can always count on the fact you will be at home and rejuvenated after a couple of weeks,' the musician added.

'We put some checks and balances in there for both the physical and mental stability. We don’t have to do what other people do.'

The Danish rocker said the band are focused on the 'long game' and take inspiration from musicians who boast longevity in the business, such as the Rolling Stones, Neil Young and Paul McCartney. 

 Lars also said that now all of the band members are in their mid-50s, the rockers are particularly focused on keeping their bodies in very good condition.

Legendary rock band recently wrapped up their WorldWired tour in the United States. 

The band will kick off their 25-show Europe tour in May, beginning in Portugal. The popular US rockers will also play in England, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and France.

In October, Metallica will head Down Under for a series of spectacular shows. 

In an added bonus, the Nothing Else Matters favourites will be supported by American band Slipknot.

'We're headed back Down Under in October and our friends in Slipknot will be joining us!' Metallica tweeted on Thursday to their 5.73 million followers.

'Tickets for our six-city tour in Australia and New Zealand go on sale Monday, March 18th.'

This is the first time Metallica have toured Australia since 2013.

They are set to play in Perth on October 17, before heading to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland.

Last year, the group made Forbes' 30 top-earning musicians for 2018. 

They placed at no.25 on this list, tying with Elton John after earning a staggering $46 million last year. 

Topping the list were Irish rockers U2, who netted a staggering $118 million.
