A 'mortified' mother has encouraged people to vacuum their mattresses regularly after discovering just how much dirt and dust was lurking under her bed sheets.

Posting in Australian group Mums Who Clean, the woman showed photos of her dirty Hoover Challenger filter after vacuuming her mattress for the first time in five years.

'I got the strangest look for vacuuming the mattress. Don't think he'll look at me like that again next time I do it. Absolutely mortified,' she said.

'Before joining MWC I don't think I would've ever thought to do it. Another tip off this group to add to my cleaning routine.'

The vacuum she used is a basic and easy-to-use product that only set her back $149 - and still it managed to pick up a significant amount of grime.

She used it without any of the attachments and it took her only five minutes to do.

The photo she shared shows a mountain of dust, dirt and hair that she managed to pick up.

Previously the woman had taken off the mattress protector as she finds the mattress more comfortable without it but after this discovery she said she will be 'putting it back on'.

'Are you honestly saying this came out of your mattress after you vacuumed it? If yes then oh my gosh,' one woman said.

Most group members who commented said they had never thought of vacuuming their mattress but after this post they were going to get straight on it.

'Holey moley! I've never vacuumed my mattress. Maybe I will,' a group member said.

'Neither have I, I'm scared to now. It amazes me how much dirt our bodies produce,' another said.

What are the best mattress cleaning tips?

Vacuum it

Start at the top of the mattress and work your way down in overlapping, narrow paths. Vacuum the sides the same way.

Deodorise with baking soda

Sprinkle your mattress well with baking soda and gently rub it in with a scrub brush, so it gets into the fabric where the stink lives. Let the baking soda sit for 10 minutes before proceeding to the next step.

Repeat vacuuming

By scrubbing the baking soda into your mattress, you've helped it bond with moisture and body oils in the top layers of material. Vacuuming it a second time pulls that moisture out, along with the cause of the odours.

Treat stains

Mattresses typically acquire three types of stains: blood, urine and 'other bodily fluids.' These need a paste of 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide mixed with 1 tablespoon each of liquid dish soap and table salt.

Lightly spread the paste onto the stain and allow it to dry before scraping the residue off. Dab at any remaining stain with a white rag dipped into hydrogen peroxide, rotating the cloth as the stain lifts off.
