Pedestrian, 74, mowed down by getaway driver fleeing from police at scene of robbery dies in hospital

A pensioner mowed down by a getaway driver fleeing a robbery has died in hospital.

Police say the 74-year-old pedestrian was taken to an east London hospital following the sickening collision, but he died in the early hours of this morning.

Police were called to reports of a robbery in Hornsey Rise Gardens at around 5.30pm yesterday.

Four men fled the car after hitting the pensioner, three of whom were arrested by police. The fourth suspect is still at large

They came up alongside a suspicious vehicle and tried to stop it in York Way, near Kings Cross train station.

But the driver refused to stop and a high speed chase followed before the car ploughed into the pensioner.

Police say four men got out the vehicle and fled the scene.

Three men were arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery and taking and driving away the car. They remain in custody while police continue to hunt the fourth suspect.

The victim has not yet been formally identified and his family have not yet been informed.

Scotland Yard said the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed, and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have launched an independent investigation

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: 'At around 5.30pm on Tuesday, officers responding to reports of a robbery in Hornsey Rise Gardens, drew alongside a suspect vehicle to stop it on York Way, junction with Caledonian Road.

'The vehicle made off at speed, colliding with a member of the public.

'Four men are believed to have decamped from the vehicle and fled the scene.

'Three men were arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery and taking and driving away and taken into custody where they remain

'Enquiries to locate the outstanding male continue.

'The pedestrian, a 74-year-old man, was taken to an east London hospital, where he sadly died in the early hours of this morning. His next of kin have not yet been informed.

'He has not yet been formally identified; a post-mortem examination will be held in due course.'

He added: 'The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who are conducting an independent investigation.'
