Atwater wanted to work for peaceful implementation of school desegregation in Durham in 1971.

During a 10-day long community meeting called a Charrette, she ended up forging an unlikely alliance with segregationist C.P. Ellis, Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan, and together they worked to improve public schools.

The movie is adapted from the book The Best of Enemies by Osha Gray Davidson.

Atwater died in 2016 but her granddaughter Ann Nakia Green attended Thursday's screening and posed for photos with Henson.
