Expertise

I’ve published twenty books over the last twenty years including the highly successful and well-regarded Queer: A Graphic History, and Rewriting the Rules (now in its second edition). I primarily write in the self-help and non-fiction genres for a general audience. I also sometimes write for therapists and other practitioners specifically, and I write some comics and fiction.

The topics that I write on include love, sex, and gender, particularly Gender, Sexual and Relationship Diversity (GSRD) including bi, trans, non-binary gender, kink, and non-monogamy/polyamory. I also write on mental health, self-care, counselling/therapy, mindfulness, and related topics.

In my writing I draw on over twenty years of experience studying, researching, and lecturing across psychology, sociology, and media/cultural studies. I also draw on over a decade’s learning and experience in both psychotherapy and LGBTQ+ activism, including studying Buddhist, existential, queer and intersectional feminist thought and practice. You can read my CV here.

Book Authoring/Editing

I mostly write books in the self-help genre which make central the social context of the struggles people have. I also write graphic guides which explain academic, therapeutic, and activist ideas simply. I’m interested in writing books which mix non-fiction together with fiction, memoir, and comics, as well as collaborating with other writers and illustrators to weave together multiple voices.

If you’re a publisher who is interested in publishing my work, here are some of the books that I’m keen to write in future. I would also be very interested in writer in residence positions.

Journalistic Articles

I’m keen to write articles for newspapers, magazines, and online forums on my areas of expertise. To get a sense of the kind of articles I write, check out these pieces for The Conversation, DIVA Magazine, Ladybeard Magazine, The Sick Festival. as well as my blog posts.

Online resources

Having worked at the Open University for ten years I have a lot of experience and expertise writing interactive online courses and website materials. I’m currently collaborating to produce short interactive ‘continuing professional development’ courses on gender and sexual diversity, and I have previously written website material for COSRT, and a key resource for the BACP.
