Forget glitter boobs! Wearing nothing but DUCT TAPE is the very daring new craze taking Coachella by storm - but would YOU be brave enough to try it?

  • Women have appeared at Coachella sporting nothing but metallic duct tape
  • The strategically placed body tape is the brainchild of designer Joel Alverez
  •  He shocked the fashion world debuting lines at Miami and LA fashion weeks

It's known as a place where fashionistas try out daring new trends and some barely-there looks.

But the famously bold Coachella style has been taken to another level this year as hundreds arrived at the music festival wearing nothing but duct tape.

Very scantily-clad women turned up for the three-day Californian festival this weekend in nothing but strategically placed, cut-up body tape to cover their modesty.

The look is the brainchild of Joel Alvarez, a Miami-based designer and photographer who has been perfecting the line for more than a decade.

'In 2008 I was a rookie photographer who was working with a model that suggested I use electrical tape her for the last look,' his website says.

'I honestly had no idea why she would want this but to make her happy I attempted to use this tape as wardrobe.

'Essentially I just wrapped her in black electrical tape! Mind you she looked like two Christmas hams wrapped in rubber bands when I was done! (I’d never show you these images!).

'However, it sparked an idea in my head to develop this idea'.

In the next few weeks, he asked several models that he'd previously worked with to let him practice on them.

'That was the moment the designs started to evolve,' he writes. 'Although primitive with a lot of trial and error, I remember thinking I was definitely onto something.

'I began to notice that the way the lines of tape would compliment the figure was unlike any wardrobe or fashion out there.'

The tape comes in a variety of colours, including metallic green, but is not suitable for swimming and will come off with sweat or in water

He then started to sell his creations in nightclubs in Miami, before taking them across the world to Ibiza, France, Norway and Canada.

After photographing a former Miss Puerto Rico, he uploaded a video of their shoot, which received seven million views and over 50,000 shares worldwide.

He claims to receive hundreds of messages on his Instagram account every day asking him to come to music festivals and clubs around the world.

Eleven years later, Instagram is flooded with images of models and music lovers wearing nothing but his body tape, which he sells on his website for up to $50 (£38) per roll. The site adds you need two rolls to complete a look.

Fans can even book a personal taping session and photoshoot with Joel, which costs up to £765.

The self-titled 'King of Tape' also offers seminars on how to create a duct tape outfit, which costs up to £575.

While the looks are often referred to as 'bikinis,' they aren't waterproof and come off in water or with excessive sweat.

And, while the website emphasising the tape is safe for skin, the brand recommends to avoid 'direct sun exposure for an extended period of time as there is a possibility you might receive some interesting tan lines'

Joel has previously made headlines for his risque looks, having debuted lines at Miami Swim Week and LA Fashion Week.

Last year, 'glitter boobs' were the hottest festival trend, which saw women turning up topless with just bodypaint and jewels covering their modesty.
