Paloma Faith defends her decision to keep her child's gender a secret and vows to keep breaking 'society's rules'

Since giving birth to her first child in 2016, Paloma Faith has decided to keep the infant's name and gender a secret.

And the 37-year-old Londoner defended her decision as she spoke after being named the face of the Skoda’s I Gotta Be Me campaign - for which she also posed for a stunning photoshoot.

Paloma, who rose to fame with her hit track Stone Cold Sober, claimed that children will be more successful as adults if they break society's rules of what is deemed to be acceptable male and female behaviour.

The singer also admitted that she would be happy for a son of hers to wear a dress so he can learn to ignore gender boundaries.

She explained: 'I'm raising my child the way I was raised. It's one of the main reasons I am the success I am.

'I was raised in a way that made me feel like anything was possible and that gender was not an issue when it came to me striving to be who I wanted to be.

'If I had a son and he started saying to me, ''I want to wear that dress'', I don't see why that's a problem at that moment in his life.'

The singing sensation, who welcomed her first child in December 2016 with French artist Leyman Lahcine, said just because a child makes a sartorial decision now doesn't mean they won't one day change their mind.

Paloma announced that she was pregnant in August 2016 in an Instagram post.

The post read: 'I am so delighted to tell you I am going to take a short while off to have a baby. I have spent my whole life wanting to be a mother and now the time has come for me to do so. I feel so lucky.'

Now more than two years on from her child's birth she shared how she was going to leave it for her child to decided what they wanted to be.

She said: 'It doesn't mean that in 20 years' time he's still going to want to wear a dress. You go through phases and we have to accept that... I think we have to leave it open to your child to decide. There's nothing wrong with any of it.

'As a kid, my favourite toys were Lego. I hated dolls. I thought they were awful. I used to cry looking at them.'

The Brit Award winner also said that gender politics means that young women in the music industry, despite the resurgence of feminism, are still being told that they have to portray a sexy image in order to be successful.

She added: 'There's still a lot of women who think it is still necessary to get their kit off to sell records, especially with social media.

'I think that it is tragic. I think people have been sold a mad idea that you are taking back your sexuality. I don't think that is true.

'I think there is a difference between sometimes doing that and it being every single post that you ever put up, and every video, and when it is completely irrelevant to the subject of the song.'

Paloma is currently the face of the Skoda’s I Gotta Be Me campaign, which helps celebrates a person's individuality, alongside The Kingdom Choir, Lady Leshurr, Alexis Ffrench and The Sherlocks.
