Mom uniform? Pregnant Chelsea Clinton dresses down in a blazer, jeans, and very scruffy-looking sneakers as she promotes her new children's book in Los Angeles

  • The 39-year-old has been on tour promoting Don't Let Them Disappear, her new kids' book on animals and endangered species
  • She and husband Marc Mezvinsky, 41, are expecting their second child
  • The mother-of-two was dressed very casually to speak in front of an audience and sign books
  • She has made several stops at book stores and zoos this week and has been recycling several clothing items, including her stained-looking Superga shoes

Chelsea Clinton is jet-setting around the country promoting her latest illustrated children's book — but when you're juggling motherhood and a schedule packed with events, dressing for comfort is key.

The 39-year-old, who is currently pregnant with her third child with husband Marc Mezvinsky, 41, stopped in at the Los Angeles Times Festival Of Books on Saturday to talk about Don't Let Them Disappear, her new kids' book on animals and endangered species.

The mother-of-two was casual as she spoke on stage and signed autographs, wearing fitted dark jeans, a white blouse, a gray blazer, and practical old sneakers.

Chelsea has been very busy promoting her book this month since its release on April 2. This weekend, she was in Los Angeles to celebrate the volume, her sixth book.

She sat down Los Angeles Times Culture Critic and Columnist Mary McNamara for a discussion on stage, then signed books for fans who had turned up.

During the talk, Chelsea spoke about children's books and animals, naming elephants as her favorite.

According to Lisa Ann Jacobs, editor of The Palos Verdes Peninsula News, the former first daughter joked: 'I don’t hold elephants responsible for their association with the GOP.'

Chelsea has been incredibly busy over the past few weeks, stopping at bookstores and zoos across the country for her  promotional tour.

Last week, she visited the Philadelphia Zoo, where she received a tour from Dr. Andy Baker.

'We were so impressed by the incredible (& difficult!) questions the kids asked us,' she tweeted about the event.

She also went to the Maryland Zoo, where she sat for a cute picture with a group of curious penguins.

'Loved meeting the polar bears, rhino & penguins @marylandzoo & their amazing keepers. A definite #DontLetThemDisappear tour highlight!' she tweeted.

Also on her schedule was The Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C., which had her reminiscing about visiting during her dad's years in the White House.

'I have so many wonderful memories visiting @NationalZoo growing up & especially cherished my visits there with my grandmother in the last years of her life. It was wonderful to see the pandas that she loved so much,' she tweeted.

Chelsea seems to be quite the smart packer for her back-to-back trips, re-wearing the same few pieces at each stop.

Her uniform for most of her non-televised appearances lately has consisted of dark blue jeans, her comfy sneakers, and her gray blazer, while she switches up the blouse underneath.

The expectant mom, who is due to give birth to her third child this summer, seems to be favoring flowy blouses that skim her baby bump.

She was certainly the bumpiest at her Maryland Zoo stop, donning a light green top with a bow.

She was a bit more glammed up earlier this month when she was back home in New York City and appeared on Good Morning America, wearing a pale pink dress and nude heels for an interview with Robin Roberts.

When asked what motivated her to pick this topic for her book — she's already covered inspirational women and how kids can make a difference — she said it came down to popular demand.

'One, I kept hearing from kids, my nieces and nephews, other kids I've met while working on my other books, that one of the issues they care most about are animals,' she said. 'Animal welfare in their own community, saving endangered species.

'And I also remember when I was a kid, the first issue that I really felt galvanized by was trying to save animals.

'And so I wrote this book for kids today and also because when I was a kid, I wish I had this book. To talk about the animals that captured my heart and imagination like elephants, and also so that I could know what to do to save them.'

Her own kids are animal lovers, too. Chelsea said four-year-old Charlotte's favorite is the shark.

'She tells everyone that will listen that we kill 100 million sharks every year, which we do. And kind of why she thinks that's awful, which it is,' she said.

'My son [two-year-old Aiden] kind of seems to have a different animal every week, but this week it's tigers. And he loves that tigers are one of the only cats that swim. He thinks that's very fun. So now in the bathtub he pretends that he's a tiger.'

More important than the topic at hand, though, is the impact that books can have on kids — which Chelsea said is a point that's been driven home since she's had her own.

'Children's books are really kind of the first ways in which we either expand or limit a child's imagination,' she said.

'What we say is possible for them as themselves, in the world, and while I'd kind of known that academically, when I became a parent I really could feel that and understand that because I watched it happen in our own home.

'So I'm just so thankful now to be able to share stories and information that I hope are empowering for kids because I think that's really what we should be doing for all our kids.'

Chelsea and Marc have been juggling two kids, and are now getting ready to add a fifth member to their family. Chelsea admitted that it's going to be a big change, but also said she's had lots of advice.

'Well, my husband's one of 11 — yes — it's actually really wonderful because so many of his older siblings are actually parents of three, so we're getting really good advice for how to manage the transition from two to three,' she said.

'But we know we're gonna be outnumbered. That's inevitable.'

Promoting her fourth children's book, Chelsea said that reading is a big thing in her house.

'We read every night to our little ones and thankfully they love books,' she said. 'It's also our daughter's favorite strategy to push bedtime back. She's knows it's very hard to say no to just one more book.'

While she and Marc generally stick to their guns, though, grandma and grandpa are a bit less strict with their grandkids and 'always give in on bedtime.'

'My husband and I are much more precise about saying "Nope, 7:30, lights out." My parents are much more easily persuadable. "Oh course you want one more story!"' she said.
