CAUTION: MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers previously held the title for its 40-minute war scene during the Battle at Helm's Deep, yet the third episode of the eighth and final season of Game Of Thrones firmly knocked the movie off the top spot as it broke records with its Battle Of Winterfell which made film history as the longest battle scene ever.

The gory fighting scenes, which aired for a full gripping 82 minutes, resulted in one of the most epic conclusions in television records after Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) killed the supreme leader of the White Walkers - The Night King, after it appeared that all hope was seemingly loss.

The final moments of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms - which is the halfway point of the season for the HBO series - ended with two of The Night King's generals, amassing his white walker soldiers outside of Winterfell.

However, the Night King and his undead dragon Viserion was nowhere to be seen, and he wasn't seen in the trailer for this third episode either, with the battle scenes involving more than 750 people both on and off the camera and was filmed over 11 weeks of night shoots.

There is a brief glimpse at one of Daenerys dragons screeching during this epic battle in the brief trailer, which only offered glimpses of the episode before the action takes place.

The opening credits to the show revealed a surprise for fans, stating that Carice Van Houten returns as Melisandre, the red priestess who hasn't been seen for quite some time.

Tyrion Lannister is outside as well, defying Daenerys' orders to stay in the crypt when the battle begins, taking a satchel for himself, watching as Theon (Alfie Allen) leads Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) out as 'bait' for the Night King.

Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) is seen on the ramparts before the battle begins, when the screech of Daeneyrs' dragons Drogon and Rhaegal are heard as they sweep overhead.

The Unsullied warriors are in formation, with catapults ready for the big attack, as everyone waits for the Night King to arrive, including Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) and Jaime Lannister with The Hound (Rory McCann) even joining in the fight.

In last week's episode, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) asked when the last time he fought for himself was, and now he's fighting for Winterfell.

Someone on horseback approaches, and it's none other than Melisandre (Carice Van Houten), approaching the battlefront, telling Jorah Mormont to tell the Dothraki warriors to lift their swords.

Melisandre inspects one of the Dothraki weapons, gripping the blade, saying something in Dothraki...  when all of the Dothraki blades are set ablaze in an epic spectacle.

The last time Melisandre was seen, in Dragonstone in the third episode of Season 7, she said she would be going to Westeros one more time, and it seems her duty has been fulfilled.

She rides through the unsullied ranks as Davos asks for the gates to be opened for her.

Melisandre is met by Davos, saying, 'There's no need to execute me, Davos, I'll be dead before the dawn,' as she looks and sees Arya glancing at her from the ramparts, as screams can be heard.

The Dothraki warriors with their flaming weapons charge ahead on horseback, with Jorah Mormont in tow, as Jon and Dany watch from their elevated position, while flaming balls are fired from catapults.

All of these soldiers hit a wall, though, as a cease fire is called and the fire from their weapons are eventually, slowly, extinguished, until there is no light left.

The remaining warriors are tense, afraid, waiting for what's next, when a horse comes running back towards them,  along with several others on foot, with Jorah injured.

Up top, Dany tries to go and Jon says, 'The Night King is coming,' and she responds, 'The dead area already here,' as their screams can be heard throughout the dark battlefield, as Grey Worm puts on his helmet.

The sounds get louder and louder as the white walkers attack, piling into the front wave of unsullied warriors, as the rest on the ground start to attack, including Brienne's left flank.

Brienne is taken to the ground, with Jaime trying to save her, when Dany comes roaring in with one dragon, and Jon raiding the next, laying waste to the white walkers and lighting the dark battlefield up.

At the Weirwood Tree, a wintry wind sweeps over Bran and Theon Greyjoy, while Jorah Mormont, Brienne of Tarth and Tormund Giantsbane fight for their lives on the ground.

Down in the crypt, Sansa heads to safety, with the women and children and non-fighters like Varys and Missandei and Tyrion, who drinks from a flask.

Outside, Jon and Dany are still flying blind, so to speak, through this winter storm, as they try to get their bearings.

On the ground, Tormund and Brienne instruct the survivors to fall back to the gates as they all rush inside, pushed back by this undead army.

Jorah slays more white walkers to protect Dany, as she grabs a sword herself, looking desperate.

Jaime and Podrick look near death, as does Brienne, as Samwell cries, while The Night King and his generals advance.

Theon has finally defended Bran, killing every last white walker around him, but The Night King comes to Bran as his eyes return to their regular color.

Bran tells Theon, 'You're a good man, thank you,' as tears stream down his face and he looks down the Night King.

While he catches her, she stabs him with her valyrian steel dagger, killing him with her dragon glass blade... killing all of the white walkers en masse.

Jorah collapses to the ground, as the rest try to make sense of what happened, as he dies in Dany's arms.

In the preview for next week's episode, Cersei (Lena Headey) waits in the Red Keep, as Dany says 'we have won the great war,' now we'll win the last war.

Cersei is seen with Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaek) as she watches over The Golden Company army, while Daenerys and the rest of Winterfell celebrate their victory in The Great War.

Arya is seen going in for a kiss, perhaps with Gendry, while Euron gets on one knee for Cersei, perhaps proposing to her.

The trailer ends with Sansa watching Daenerys' two dragons flying over Winterfell, with a voice-over featuring Dany saying they will rip Cersei out, 'root and stem.'

Game Of Thrones: A breakdown of everyone who died during the Battle of Winterfell (and who's fate is still up in the air)

Sunday night's episode of Game of Thrones featured the long-awaited Battle of Winterfell, and, as many expected, it featured the deaths of several characters.

Last week's episode, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, featured several characters waiting for the battle to begin in Winterfell, most of whom expected to meet their demise.

All in all, there were seven characters who met their demise in the third of six episodes, some of whom were more unexpected than others

Thrones deaths: Sunday night's episode of Game of Thrones featured the deaths of several pivotal characters

Among the characters in Winterfell in the previous episode, and in this new episode, are the Stark family - Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright), who are defending their home from the Night King and his army of white walkers.

Other characters who have come to Winterfell include Gendry (Joe Dempsie), The Hound (Rory McCann), Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer), Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju), Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham), Podrick (Daniel Portman) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage).

Others in Winterfell include Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen), Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey), Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) and Gilly (Hannah Murray).

They are all fighting under the command of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), who plans to take the Iron Throne after defeating the Night King.

Of all the deaths, perhaps the most surprising of them all was a character who hadn't been seen since Season 7, Episode 3, Melisandre (Carice Van Houten).

While everyone was waiting for the battle to begin, Melisandre made an unexpected appearance on horseback, using her witchcraft to set fire to all of the Dothraki soldiers' weapons.

She also put her sorcery on display when she helped light the trenches, creating a fiery barrier between the white walker army and the Winterfell castle.

Her death was the only one that was self-inflicted, taking her own life by removing the mystical jewel she always wore around her neck, and dying alone in the snow, the final scene of Sunday night's episode.

Of the remaining deaths, perhaps the most shocking was the surprise demise of The Night King, especially with three episodes left this season.

While the Night King and his forces most certainly decimated the combined forces from Winterfell, the Dothraki horde and the unsullied soldiers, it was young Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) that ended the war single-handedly... well, technically, with two hands.

The Night King seemed to have the battle all but won, arriving underneath the Weirwood Tree to kill the Three-Eyed Raven (Isaac Hempstead Wright).

As he reached back to grab his sword, Arya Stark flew through the air with her valyrian steel dagger.

While he was able to stop her first attempt, she dropped the valyrian steel dagger, catching it with the other hand and stabbing him through the chest, killing him and every white walker instantly.

Two of the charcters who were killed have been around since the first season, and both died quite honorably, Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) and Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen).

Theon Greyjoy has had one of the most interesting arcs in the entire series, a cast-off from the Iron Islands who was raised by the Starks.

While he ultimately betrayed the Starks, he found redemption this season, returning to Winterfell to fight for the Starks, and dying at the hand of the Night King, protecting Bran, a.k.a. The Three Eyed Raven.

Jorah Mormont has also been a mainstay on Game of Thrones since the first season, often at the side of his Khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

While it looked like he was going to die at the hands of greyscale a few seasons ago, Samwell Tarly managed to save him at the Citadel, and he returned to Dany's side.

While he fought valiantly at her side, saving her life multiple times in this episode alone, Jorah had been injured too badly and he succumbed to his injuries.

Perhaps one of the bravest characters on the show, young Lyanna Mormont of Bear Island (Bella Ramsey) got one of the most honorable deaths.

While she was seen arguing with Jorah towards the end of last week's episode, about whether or not she should fight, she had perhaps the biggest kill of the episode.

Despite her diminutive size, she took on a white walker giant, and while he crushed the life out of her, she stabbed him in the eye, taking his life as it took hers.

After being resurrected six times by the Lord of Light (via Thoros of Myr), Beric Dondarrion finally died his final death.

Even with his flaming sword, Dondarrion, like the rest of those who fought at the Battle of Winterfell, was outnumbered throughout the battle.

He ultimately passed from his injuries in an isolated room with Arya Stark.

The final death was a character who has been around since Season 2, Eddison Tollett, a.k.a. Dolorous Edd (Ben Crompton), a member of the Night's Watch.

He first appeared in the Season 2 premiere episode and appeared in multiple episodes of every season since, except for Season 7, when he appeared in one episode.

After saving the life of his former Night's Watch compatriot Samwell Tarly, Edd was killed by one of the white walkers.

Of all the characters who appeared in Sunday night's episode, there are two whose fate wasn't explicitly spelled out.

The first was Samwell Tarly, who was last seen surrounded by a horde of white walkers, long before Arya killed all of the white walkers.

Unlike most of the main characters, who were seen alive and (relatively) well after the Night King was killed, Samwell was nowhere to be found.

The other character who's fate was uncertain was Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson), the unsullied commander who was seen on the battlefield just before Samwell Tarly's last appearance.

Like Samwell, he was not seen after the Night King and the white walkers were destroyed, leaving his fate uncertain.

In last week's episode, Grey Worm had indicated to his lover, Missandei, that he wanted to take her to the beach, and live out the rest of their days together, but it's unclear if that will happen.

Game of Thrones continues with the fourth of six episodes in this final season on Sunday, May 5 at 9 PM ET on HBO.

Game Of Thrones fans take to social media as Arya trends on Twitter

Game Of Thrones fans took to social media to comment on an epic battle during Sunday's episode as the Night King and his army marched on Winterfell.

Fans of the HBO show were ready for the fight early as one viewer took to Twitter before the episode aired and posted a photo showing two dozen of the characters including Daenerys Targaryen, Sansa Stark and Tyrion Lannister with votive candles.

The dark caption read: 'me prepping for tomorrow'.

Arya started trending high on Twitter as fans rejoiced over her heroic move.

One Twitter user asked others to retweet 'if you are in love with Arya' as fans embraced the character played since 2011 by English actress Maisie Williams, 22

Arya using her Valyrian steel dagger to kill the Night King also drew a comparison to NBA player Damian Lillard, 28, whose 37-foot, game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer last week for the Portland Trail Blazers was the dagger that ended the Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs.

A tweet that read 'Arya Stark:' was followed by a photo of Lillard after his game-winning, series-clinching dagger.
