These haunting mugshots reveal an insight into Pentonville prison in London - the home to the highest number of mentally disturbed inmates. Built in 1842 by Captain Joshua Ebb, Pentonville saw inmates forbidden to speak to each other, made to wear brown cloth masks and kept alone in cells for weeks. An official report stated: 'for every sixty thousand persons imprisoned in Pentonville there were 220 cases of insanity, 210 cases of delusion, and forty suicides'.
