The doctor who rushed to perform CPR at the scene of the California synagogue shooting fainted when he realized the victim he was attempting to revive was his wife.
Lori Gilbert-Kaye, 60, died on Saturday in the shooting spree where 19-year-old gunman John T. Earnest opened fire at Chabad of Poway Synagogue during a Passover service.
After shots rang out, worshipers called her husband Dr. Howard Kaye to help victims.
He began to perform CPR on her, and when it dawned on him the victim was his wife, he fainted from shock according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
She died while saving her rabbi's life, throwing herself in between Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein and Earnest.
'He’s laying on the floor next to his wife. And then the daughter comes out screaming. It was the most heart-wrenching sight I could have seen,' Rabbi Goldstein recalled to the New York Post.

'Lori took the bullet for all of us. She didn’t deserve to die,' Goldstein said. 'She was the kindest person I have ever known and the community has ever known. We're in such shock'.
Kaye is survived by her husband and 22-year-old daughter Hannah.
According to Goldstein's sister-in-law, Kaye's daughter Hannah had gotten married just two weeks ago.
'We were dancing with her two weeks ago,' Chana Goldstein said to the outlet.
Kaye was a founding member of the congregation and was friends with the rabbi for 25 years.
She attended the service that day to say a Kaddish prayer for her mother who passed away in November.
She was the only fatal victim in the horror attack. Three others were injured - Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, 57; Noya Dahan, 8; and Almog Peretz, 34, who was visiting from Israel.
By Sunday morning, all three of those victims were discharged from the hospital.
'God picked her to die to send a message because she’s such an incredible person,' her friend Dr. Ronneet Lev said to the Union-Tribune. 'He took her for a higher purpose to send this message to fight antisemitism.'

'She didn't die a senseless death,' Lev said to CNN. 'She died advertising the problem we have with anti-Semitism and to bring good to this world. ... If God put an angel on this planet, it would have been Lori.'
Rabbi Goldstein hailed Lori as 'the ultimate woman of kindness' after she saved his life.
'Lori and I have known each other for over 25 years. She was one of the pioneering members of our congregation. She is not just a member, she's an activist. She personified ultimate of kindness and generosity,' he said Saturday night to CNN's Brisn Stelter.
'She's one of those people who are always there to be able to help others in their time of need. When people are diagnosed with cancer, she would be dragging them to appointments and would bring flowers to cheer people up and bake Shabbat challah just to bring the family some happiness.
Eight-year-old girl Noya Dahan was another victim in the shooting. She hit by shrapnel and was wounded in one leg and in the face and transferred to a children's hospital

'She was the ultimate woman of kindness and it's unfathomable, why this beautiful, beautiful, wonderful human being would be shot down,' he added.
Eight-year-old Noya Dahan was among the three injured victims. She was with her two sisters at the service and was injured by shrapnel, suffering a wound to the leg and the face.
'We're shocked, it's a little bit scary. We're all over the place,' her father Israel Dahan said early Sunday.
The family had moved from Israel eight years ago in search of a safer life after Israel and his wife were injured by rockets.
'(We were) under the impression that everything is good here. Today we noticed his is not even close to be regular life,' Dahan said.

Almog Peretz is the uncle of little Noya and was hit by shrapnel as he was trying to protect his niece. He was visiting from Israel for Passover and attended the service with some friends.

He saw the gunman point his rifle towards the children and then opened the doors of the congregation, yelling for the kids to get out and helped bring them to a nearby home to hide.
Many lives were saved in the shooting because the gunman's rifle jammed, according to Lev.
A GoFundMe page has been created to raise funds for the Chabad synagogue following the shooting and by Sunday evening reached over $64,000, more than half the $118,000 goal.
Gunman John T. Earnest opened fire with an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle then fled and retreated into a vehicle after an armed off-duty Border Patrol agency returned fire at the shooter.
He later called the police on himself and surrendered.
