Soldiers who had defected to Guaido's cause were earlier shown setting up heavy machine gun positions on bridges around the base, and witnesses said they had got into skirmishes with Maduro's loyalists. Guaido urged protesters to join him on the streets and encouraged other members of the armed forces to defect as part of what he called 'the final phase of Operation Liberty'. US National Security Adviser John Bolton, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Vice President Mike Pence tweeted out their support, while Maduro's allies in Bolivia and Cuba denounced what they called a coup attempt.

His trial at Hereford Crown Court heard how the pair had exchanged vile messages (inset) boasting about how they got women 'blind and then back to ours'.

He told local media she was knocked into the ocean by a huge wave. Her husband Jorge (together inset) followed her into the water to try to save her but they were separated by the storm. He was rescued after swimming towards to coast for almost three hours. Caroline, who has a 17-year-old daughter from a previous relationship (together left), was pulled from the water on Monday afternoon. In a video posted on IGTV (left), Caroline can be seen dancing with one of her dogs to celebrate the end of her training.

Ajax fans have descended on Leicester Square and the Strand ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Tottenham. The Dutch giants take part in their first final-four game in Europe's elite club competition in 22 years on Tuesday night and their supporters are taking advantage of the opportunity. On a warm day in London, their fan base met at one of the capital's landmarks to enjoy their trip.

Denise and Colin Turton travelled to London from Bristol today to watch the first day of evidence for the Infected Blood Inquiry. Their son Lee (pictured) died aged 10 in January 1992 after contracting HIV through contaminated blood products. Speaking after the inquiry Mrs Turton said she wanted to 'find the truth' and 'get justice' for her son. Around 4,800 people with haemophilia are believed to have been infected with hepatitis C or HIV in the 1970s and 1980s after receiving contaminated blood products from the NHS. More than 2,000 patients are believed to have died as a result, including those who suffered from the genetic disorder which affects the blood's ability to clot. And it wasn't just those with haemophilia that suffered, thousands more may have received contaminated blood after being given transfusions following an operation or childbirth.

His nephew – the former Emperor’s youngest grandson – 12-year-old Prince Hisahito attended the ceremony (bottom right) and becomes second-in-line to the throne.
