Sonic The Hedgehog sends fans into a frenzy as it releases cheeky new trailer featuring Jim Carrey as the sinister Dr. Robotnik

Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the most beloved video games characters of all time.

And now the little blue Sega character is getting the Hollywood treatment.

Fans got their first look at the upcoming film when the trailer premiered online Tuesday morning.

James Marsden is charming as ever as he plays Sonic's human counterpart, a small town sheriff named Tom Wachowski. Ben Schwartz voices the iconic character.

But it's Jim Carrey who truly steals the show as the sinister Dr. Robotnik, Sonic's signature villain. When Robotnik is invited to help the US Army find Sonic, he uses the opportunity to put wicked plans into motion.

Sonic explains how it's now his job to save the world from his archnemesis, telling his friend Tom 'Basically, it looks like I'm going to have to save your planet' - also seeming to suggest that he is not of this earth.

Several high octane scenes show the blue rascal conducting waves of electricity as he crashes head on into cars, surfs sand dunes, and literally pauses the flow of time.

Strangely, much of the trailer is backed by the early 90s hip-hop track Gangsters Paradise.

Though the Sonic trailer certainly made waves, not all reactions were positive.

@JeremySmiles took to Twitter to toss in their two cents, with one writing: 'me: the sonic trailer will be bad,' adding 'me when the sonic trailer is bad' with a shocked reaction image.

'Good morning to absolutely everyone and everything other than live action Sonic the Hedgehog’s creepy human teeth xx' wrote Inside Gaming reviews director Alanah Pearce.

'About that new Sonic the Hedgehog trailer...' gaming hardware company @Razer tweeted along with a side by side image of the characters.

'Calling it now: Detective Pikachu is the new MCU and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie is the new DCU.' another wrote with a shady reference to the Marvel/DC rivalry.

And others were more concerned with Sonic's anatomy, wondering if he was hiding anything down south.
