Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson go for laughs in first official trailer for the film Late Night

It made its debut at Sundance Film Festival back in January to raving reviews.

And now Late Night - starring Emma Thompson, 60, and Mindy Kaling, 39 - is ramping up for a release as a trailer dropped on Wednesday.

The film follows the UK-native's character who is  on the verge of losing her late night talk show after 30-years before things are shaken up when her new inexperienced writer joins the team, merely as a diversity hire.

The change she needed: The latest trailer for Late Night sees Mindy Kaling's character, Molly, save female talk-show host, Katherine Newbury, played by Emma Thompson, in a ratings crash and all white male world

As the only successful female late talk-show host, Katherine Newbury (Emma) is seen sticking to what she knows - using her male writers who all graduated from elite colleges.

But after her ratings continue to plummet, journalists call her out for being 'a woman who hates women' and rumors begin to swirl that she's about to lose her job to a younger male, the 43-time Emmy award winner decides it's time to hire a female.

More or less a sympathy hire, lifelong fan Molly is given the job, and while her male co-workers continue to get fired by tough Katherine, she's determined to stay put.

When asked if she had any comedic experience under her belt, the scene flashes back to her using a microphone at her chemical plan efficiency centre.

She jokes to her co-workers: 'If you have a problem, ask the chemist, she'll always have the solution,' to which they crack up laughing.

And while Katherine was the one who wanted a female writer on the team, she needed some time to adjust.

Different: Molly's character is seen speaking up in meetings, something her male co-workers and Katherine is not used to

'You know what doesn't work, a newcomer coming in and giving me her  assessments of my comic persona,' she says during a staff meeting in front of everyone including Molly.

And it appears as though the newest member of the team took the words to heart, seen venting to her male counterpart while hiding under a desk.

'I will not be marginalized cause no one here looks like me,' she says.

But when her co-worker (played by Reid Scott) tells her she's not being silenced because of her gender or looks and simply her inexperience, she strives to work harder and do better.

'She's not trying to silence your strong, female, woman of color spirit, hashtag #MeToo blah blah blah, you're a new writer with no experience. Write something,' he says.

And very soon Katherine feels as though she can't live without Molly in her life.

'I need you Molly to help me change this show,' she pleads, making her the ultimate sidekick and reviving her dying late night talk show.

New ideas: The pair come up with segments to break diversity barriers and change people's perception that Katherine isn't 'a woman who hates women'. One skit sees the host head out on the street to help people of color do things that are not so easy to do such as hail a cab
