Police are hunting a suspect who hurled a dog from a Cornish clifftop into the sea while his laughing friend filmed 'cruel act' on his mobile.

Footage of the shocking incident had been posted online, and widely shared, before it was deleted.

The person shooting the video clip can be heard laughing above a beach, believed to be near Falmouth, Cornwall, where some cliffs tower more than 100ft high.

The video shows the black and white dog flailing in the air as it tossed from the clifftop into the sea by a young man.

Copies of the video have been removed from social media sites and Facebook users have slammed the suspect.

Local police tweeted: 'We are aware of an incident of animal cruelty which has been reported in Falmouth.

'This matter is being investigated but please appreciate that we need to do this effectively without intrusion or inappropriate comments.'

The dog is seen swimming desperately to reach the shore. 

According to Cornwall Live, local police said: 'Police are investigating a report of concern for the welfare of an animal in Falmouth on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 1. 

'This relates to a dog being thrown into the sea. The dog has been checked over and is uninjured.

'The investigation is ongoing and enquiries are continuing. We ask that people, including users of social media, do not speculate around the circumstances of this incident, or the individual involved.'
