Although eight NBA franchises play in cities where it is legal to purchase or possess marijuana without a prescription, the substance is still banned by the league. The drug is legal only by prescription in New York, although the Nets' former home of New Jersey is on the verge of a vote that would legalize marijuana in that state.

If Russell pleads guilty or is convicted of marijuana possession, he would be asked to enter a substance abuse program. The NBA requires three violations before a suspension is warranted.

The NBA does not test players over the off-season, which for Russell, began last week after the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Nets in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Russell is coming off his best season as a professional after averaging 21.1 Points and 7.0 assists per game in his second campaign with the Nets.

He was also selected to his first All-Star game in February.

Russell is a restricted free agent this summer and is expected to re-sign in Brooklyn, where he's played since being acquired for center Brook Lopez in 2017.

'I definitely want to be here but I also know it's a business, too,' Russell told reporters on Wednesday. 'So I'm not going to play that role like I don't know what could possibly happen.

'Say somebody comes here that I have to be a part of [a transaction to acquire them], I know that could be a possibility. So I just want to stay in this moment and not speak too soon about anything.'
