Not every risk pays off and this was clear on Wednesday night's red carpet.
And the evidence was there for all to see on the red carpet of the Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as Halsey, Tori Kelly and Yung Miami all illustrated.
Halsey, 24, was at the top of the list in a black and electric blue gown that appeared to be inspired by burlesque dancers as gave a nod to the ruffled, lingerie-inspired looks of the era.
