The Tories have already been stripped of hundreds of seats as the party was abandoned by voters furious about the state of Brexit. Conservatives had already been braced for a tough night amid frustration at Prime Minister Theresa May's failure to take Britain out of the EU on March 29 as planned. But the party suffered a clear meltdown in support after early morning counting, losing more than 400 seats before even half of the 248 councils holding elections had declared results today. Election guru Sir John Curtice declared voters had declared 'a plague on both your houses' as both the Tories and Labour took big hits in their heartlands in the South East and North respectively. Furious Brexit supporters took to social media to show they had spoiled their ballot papers to show their demand to leave the EU immediately (inset). But the Lib Dems, a hardcore Remain party, made significant gains with some predictions they could add up to 500 council seats. In Chelmsford, local MP Vicky Ford (main) became upset during an interview after a bad night for the Tories in which they lost control of three councils.

Some voters scribbled 'Brexit means Brexit', 'Get May out and us out of the EU' or 'traitors' on their forms and refused to mark crosses against any candidates' names in areas including Ipswich.

UK weather: SNOW, rain and frost could make May Day Bank Holiday the coldest EVER

Forecasters predict an east-west divide, with sunshine and showers in the East and fine conditions elsewhere. But even the South may struggle to reach 12C (54F) this weekend, while Scotland could fall to -5C (23F) overnight. In the North East of England, a maximum of 9C (48F) is likely tomorrow, rising to 10C (50F) on Sunday. The daytime average for the start of May is around 16C (61F). Frosts are possible in parts of the Pennines and Welsh mountains. Pictured: Snow on the A939 near Tomintoul in Moray today (main image).

JAN MOIR: All we want is to share in the joy of Baby Sussex

JAN MOIR: Almost 50 days. That is how long it has been since the Duchess of Sussex (pictured left with Harry on March 19th) has appeared in public. One presumes she spent her time at Frogmore Cottage (bottom right), mother Doria, pictured with Meghan inset, by her side, preparing for this wonderful event that might have already happened. The world's most expensive resort is now open: Inside Banwa Private Island

It's called Banwa Private Island, and while the price tag is eye-wateringly hefty it does secure guests the entire island. And what an island. Nestling in the Palawan archipelago in the Philippines - regarded as 'the last ecological frontier', according to the resort's website - it's pretty much 15 acres of paradise on earth. The resort website says that it's 'a private world where time stands still' and where temperatures rarely dip below 30C. The accommodation is luxury through and through.

Fascinating footage shows France's last ever duel: Two politicians fought for their honour in 1967 after one shouted 'Shut up, stupid!' at the other

Marseille mayor Gaston Defferre and Rene Ribière (pictured together during the duel) fought in a private residence in Neuilly-sur-Seine, west of Paris. They confronted each other with épées (inset), the largest type of swords used in fencing. The duel was officiated by Jean de Lipkowskiin, who put an end to it after Ribière was struck twice. Ribière was 12 years younger but he took the combat very seriously. He offered not only to use sharper swords, but also to continue fighting after Defferre first struck him. Ribière was to be married the following day. Defferre had vowed not to kill him, but to wound him and 'spoil his wedding night very considerably'.
