Ron Howard in talks to bring a Willow sequel TV series to the new Disney+ streaming service

More than 30 years after director Ron Howard brought Willow to the big screen, the filmmaker is continuing the story on the small screen.

The 65 year old filmmaker and his Solo: A Star Wars Story collaborator Jon Kasdan are in negotiations for a Willow sequel TV series, according to Variety.

Howard had actually been hinting about a continuation of Willow on some level since last May, when he was making the press rounds for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

During an interview with ComicBook.com last May, Howard discussed the possibility of a Willow follow-up.

'I don’t want to give away too much, but there is a little talk of Willow…We wouldn’t call it Willow 2, I think it would focus a lot on Elora Danan, although Willow would have to be significantly involved.'

The original movie followed the dwarf Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis), who is tasked with protecting an infant, Elora Danan, who, according to prophesy, will destroy the nefarious Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh).

'There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy,' Howard said.

'We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go,' Howard added.

'In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others.'

'And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool,' Howard concluded.

He went on to confirm it is a continuation of the original film, and Warwick Davis would, 'be in it.

'Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action,' Howard said.

There is no word yet if this series will also bring other characters from the original Willow movie back, like Val Kilmer's Madmartigan, a swordsman who helps Willow on his journey, and Joanne Whaley's Sorsha, the Queen's daughter who ultimately switches sides.

The original movie was directed by Howard from a script by Bob Dolman, based on an original story by Star Wars creator George Lucas.

This Willow series would be the latest of several LucasFilm projects being lined up for the Disney+ streaming service, slated to launch November 12.

Other LucasFilm projects in the works for Disney+ include The Mandalorian, the first ever live-action Star Wars TV series from Jon Favreau, plus an untitled series focusing on Diego Luna's Cassian Andor from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the return of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
