  • Retailer expects to be completely sold out by weekend, but plans to restock

Princess Charlotte has proved herself to be a style queen after a massive spike in sales of the summer dress she wore in her fourth birthday photos.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's middle child was pictured in Trotters' £70 Lily Rose Betsy dress, featuring a blue floral Liberty print, puff sleeves and a Peter Pan collar, and UK mothers have made sure to get their hands on it as soon as possible.

Sophie Mirman, founder of childrenswear company Trotters, said: 'We've pretty much sold out online.

'As soon as the image came out, we saw a massive spike in sales. There's been a huge, huge amount of interest.

'We're a small family business and everything is designed by us and made exclusively for us. It's lovely to have that recognition.

'It's such a beautiful photograph of the princess.'

She added: 'We expect it to be sold out by the weekend but we're able to manufacture some more.

'We're desperately trying to get more stock back in.'

The summer outfit has sold out in sizes 4Y, 5Y and 6/7Y - but there are some still available in size 2Y, 3Y and 8/9Y.

The princess's £26 navy Hampton Canvas Plum shoes are also by Trotters, and have attracted a great deal of interest as well.

Ms Mirman added: 'There was a huge spike in sales of the shoes overnight.'

Charlotte was spotted wearing a pink Rosa version of the shoes at the Houghton Horse trials last year, while George was wearing a navy pair, prompting speculation he may have handed them down to his younger sister.

The Duchess of Cambridge turned to Trotters to dress Prince Louis for his first birthday photos last week, when he wore the Thomas Brown Little Puppy Jumper in denim blue.

Followers of royal fashion praised the choice of Charlotte's outfits on Twitter, with @WhatKateWore writing 'Isn't she just darling in these?!' and @CharlotteStyleO saying the princess 'gets cuter and cuter with each new pic.'

Charlotte was also pictured wearing a tartan Yarrow skirt by Amaia Kids in the series of three birthday images taken by Kate.

The £50 skirt is from the 2017 autumn/winter and no longer appears on the children's luxury clothing company's website.

Charlotte was also seen in the item at the Burnham Market horse trials in Norfolk last month.

Charlotte also wore a grey wool cardigan with multi-coloured flecks over a navy turtleneck in the images released by Kensington Palace.

Two years ago the Princess, then aged two, was already making headlines for her cute outfits. The yellow cardigan she wore in the official pictures taken for her second birthday by Kate Middleton sold out instantly.

So sought-after was the John Lewis item that carefully crafted copies quickly started to circulate on bidding website Ebay.

This drove searches for Princess Charlotte on eBay to increase 10-fold.

There were three searches an hour for the item itself - 'yellow cardigan' - across the whole month, peaking on the day the photo was first released,' an Ebay spoken  said at the time.

Similarly, a Liberty print smock dress worn by the young princess on the Royal Tour of Germany in July 2017, saw a six-fold increase in people searching 'Princess Charlotte Dress'.
