A Gold Coast beach was transformed into a post-apocalyptic campsite for upcoming Hollywood blockbuster Monster Problems on Thursday.  

Dylan O'Brien, 27, who has landed a role in the film, was photographed shooting scenes on the sand while scavenging through rubbish with a weapon.

The movie is said to be centered around Dylan's character escaping an underground bunker to survive in a world 'overrun by monsters', reported Pedestrian.

On Thursday, Dylan was filming scenes attempting to defend himself. 

Dressed in rags with a bandage on his arm, the Teen Wolf star was seen scurrying around on the golden sand with the large speared weapon in hand.

Some of the monsters in the film are believed to be 'giant frogs and spiders' among other 'weird hybrid creations'.

A close-up of Dylan later showed the actor appearing to pounce with the weapon. 

Although non of the frightening monsters were cited on set, it is likely they will be added in post-production once filming has wrapped.

The large scale production was set up in a rock alcove, ensuring it was hidden from passing members of the public.

On the other side of the rocks, oblivious locals soaked up the sun and surfed the waves while the cast filmed.

Dylan was later joined by other characters in the film.

Showing there will be some light-hearted moments, the hunk was captured by the crew throwing a football around with them.

The movie, which is believed to have started production in February, is also said to be filming at Screen Queensland's new $12 million studios in Brisbane.  

In February, Courier Mail reported the production was 'lured to Brisbane by a $7.7 million Federal Government incentive.'

'This project will create more than 700 new jobs and directly benefit over 220 local businesses,' Arts Minister Mitch Fifield told the publication. 

Monster Problems is expected to hit the big screen in 2020.
